Malaysia’s Transport Push: RTS, Digital Upgrades and Rail Milestones

At the ministry’s August assembly in Putrajaya, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said one of the biggest highlights is the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.

"The first train was unveiled in June at Singapore’s Rail Test Centre. Once ready, the 4km line will carry up to 10,000 passengers an hour in each direction," he said. ecrl-genting-.jpg
In addition, commuters can now renew the My50 travel pass via the Touch ’n Go eWallet using NFC, which eliminates counter queues, while the KLIA Aerotrain is back on track with new three-car sets carrying 270 passengers per trip for smoother airport transfers.

Cross-border traffic rules have also tightened. Vehicle Entry Permits (VEP) are now mandatory for Singapore-registered cars entering Malaysia.

"More than 52,000 vehicles have been checked since July, with 2,200 notices issued. Offenders face RM300 fines and travel bans," Loke stressed. VEP-entry-(1).jpg
Rail projects are moving ahead too. The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) hit a breakthrough in July with the completion of the 16.39km Genting Tunnel.

Meanwhile, Perlis and Kota Setar are rolling out the new Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) under the BAS.MY brand, introducing 13 routes and free rides for students and senior citizens. WhatsApp-Image-2024-12-16-at-2.12.10-PM-full_normal.jpg
Loke also highlighted RAC’s role in driving urban projects such as Ipoh Sentral and Seremban Sentral while preserving historic stations.

In Johor, locals recently welcomed Mahkota Rail Square in Kluang, where an abandoned viaduct has been transformed into a lively community park. BN082329165_1755930419.jpg
“These achievements show our commitment to a transport system that is efficient, sustainable and people-centred,” Loke was quoted as saying.
