PIAM Warns of Rogue Tow Truck Operators After Accidents

Getting into an accident is stressful enough, but motorists may face bigger problems if they fall into the hands of dishonest tow truck operators, warns the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM).

Its CEO, Chua Kim Soon, said some tow truck operators work by sending damaged vehicles to workshops that pay them the highest commission. Once that happens, the owner risks inflated repair bills as the workshop tries to recover its costs.

“Ultimately, the charges come back to you,” he said, adding that substandard repairs and questionable practices are also common at non-panel workshops.

Instead of proper fixes, Chua said, parts may be swapped with used components from chop shops, or dents may be crudely hammered out. In some cases, cars are held back until extra fees are paid before they can be released.

The risks are even greater for electric vehicles, which require specialised tools and trained technicians. Using unqualified workshops can lead to dangerous outcomes.

Chua also cautioned that some rogue tow truck operators disguise themselves with insurance company stickers. “Anyone can paste on a logo. Some may even be former service providers who never removed them,” he said.

He advised drivers to always contact their insurer directly after an accident. Many insurers now provide mobile apps for instant assistance, while policy details or road tax discs usually carry the necessary contact numbers.

Above all, he urged motorists to remain calm when approached by unauthorised operators. “Decline politely and reach out to your insurer. You’ve already paid for coverage, so make sure you use it. That way, you’ll know your car is being repaired properly with genuine parts,” he said.
