The government’s clampdown on overloaded trucks is starting to pay off, with transport operations running smoother and no noticeable increase in rates over the past eight weeks, according to the Malaysia Trucking Federation (MTF).

The crackdown, which began on Oct 14 and will continue until Dec 31, targets operators who flout weight limits.

"Companies following legal weight limits have maintained stable rates, while those that previously relied on overloading now charge fairly per tonne, keeping trip costs the same," the federation said.

“Trucks are turning around faster, scheduling is easier, and cargo planning is more efficient

“We’re seeing a clear shift toward a more professional and sustainable trucking industry,” it added.

During the first two weeks of enforcement, some adjustment was needed, but as operators and customers adapted to the new rules, overall operations have stabilized.

Transport capacity remains sufficient to meet demand, dispelling concerns that stricter limits would slow down deliveries.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook emphasized that the crackdown is essential to protect road users and will continue regardless of complaints from sectors like oil milling or construction, which had raised concerns over increased operational costs.

MTF stressed that companies still overloading their vehicles should transition immediately to lawful operations to ensure safety and compliance.

The federation believes this approach will prevent long-term risks, from vehicles breaking down mid-route to accidents caused by unsafe loads.

"It’s also expected to improve public perception of the transport sector, reduce post-operation maintenance costs, and set a new benchmark for professionalism," it concluded.
