Smart Lanes Showing Big Drop in Highway Accidents - Nanta
Highway smart lanes are proving to be a safer way to travel during peak hours, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. Data from several smart lane locations shows a significant drop in accidents since their activation.
For example, the Putra Mahkota to Southville stretch saw a 22% reduction in accidents, while the R&R Rawang to Rawang junction section recorded an impressive 74% drop.
"Most incidents in smart lanes aren’t caused by road design but they’re usually human error, like speeding, changing lanes without signaling, or using the lane outside its designated operating hours," he said.

Smart lanes work by temporarily opening emergency lanes to ease traffic during busy periods. Before activation, highway concessionaires and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) carry out safety patrols to ensure there are no obstacles or disruptions.
Notice boards, CCTV monitoring, and portable messaging systems are also in place to keep drivers informed of smart lane operations in real-time.
"Authorities also collaborate with the police and road transport department to make sure heavy vehicles stay out of the lanes. Regular safety audits are conducted to maintain high standards, so while smart lanes cut travel time, they don’t compromise road safety," Nanta added.

According to the minister, the smart lane program is already showing that with proper management, traffic flow can improve while keeping accident rates low, proving that smart infrastructure and responsible driving go hand in hand.
