Does Jaecoo J5 Offer "More" Than the X50 and HR-V? The 2026 B-SUV Breakdown
![]()
With the Jaecoo J5 officially set to launch in Malaysia tomorrow, March 5, 2026, the B-segment SUV market is bracing for a shakeup. Priced at an estimated RM110,000, the J5 is entering a battlefield of giants that have just sharpened their swords.
The Proton X50 Facelift and the Honda HR-V Facelift were both updated in July 2025 with significant upgrades. If you have around RM100k to spend, here is how the new "Rugged Luxury" challenger stacks up against the updated national and Japanese favorites.
1. The "Screen War": Bigger is Better?

Inside the cabin, the competition has moved to massive displays.
- Proton X50 (2025 Facelift): Proton currently holds the crown for size with a massive 14.6-inch infotainment head unit. This updated screen now natively supports Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, fixing a long-standing complaint from owners.
- Jaecoo J5: While slightly smaller at 13.2 inches, the J5's screen is expected to be in 2K high-definition and features a sleek portrait orientation.
- Honda HR-V (2025 Facelift): Honda keeps things functional with an 8-inch floating touchscreen. While it feels modest compared to the other two, it also includes Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
2. Powertrain: Turbo vs. Natural Aspiration vs. Hybrid

While all three SUVs now utilize 4-cylinder engines, how they deliver that power varies significantly based on your driving needs.
- Proton X50 (The Performance Leader): With the July 2025 update, the X50 shifted to a new 1.5L 4-cylinder Turbo engine (replacing the old 3-cylinder). It produces a class-leading 181 PS and 290 Nm of torque, making it the clear choice for those who prioritize raw acceleration and highway overtaking.
- Jaecoo J5 (The Balanced Middle Ground): It features a 1.5L Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine delivering 147 PS and 210 Nm of torque. Paired with a CVT, it is specifically tuned for smooth urban delivery and fuel efficiency rather than outright speed.
- Honda HR-V (The King of Variety): Every variant uses a 4-cylinder engine, but you choose the "flavor":
- 1.5L S (NA): 121 PS / 145 Nm — For the reliability-focused buyer.
- 1.5L Turbo (E & V): 181 PS / 240 Nm — For a punchy, sporty drive.
- 1.5L RS (e:HEV Hybrid): 131 PS / 253 Nm (motor) — For those who want the best fuel economy in the segment.
3. The Space War: Which One Carries More?

Beyond the interior design, the way these SUVs handle cargo and passengers is a major deciding factor for Malaysian families.
- Jaecoo J5 (The "Big Box" Champion): If you prioritize raw volume, the J5 is the undisputed leader. It offers a massive 480-litre boot, which expands to a cavernous 1,280 litres with the seats folded. The wide, flat floor is specifically designed to fit large pet carriers or bulky camping gear that would struggle to fit in its rivals.
- Honda HR-V (The "Magic" Versatility King): While its exact boot volume is not specified, Honda counters its rivals with the standard Ultra Seat function. This unique system allows the rear seats to be configured in multiple ways—such as flipping the seat bases up—to accommodate tall or awkwardly shaped items that would not typically fit in a standard B-SUV, a level of interior flexibility that neither the X50 nor the J5 offers.
- Proton X50 (The Compact Urbanite): The X50 focuses on passenger comfort over cargo. Its 330-litre boot is the smallest of the trio, making it better suited for daily urban commutes and grocery runs rather than heavy-duty hauling. However, it offers a well-packaged cabin that feels airy thanks to the panoramic sunroof on higher trims.
4. The "Convenience" War: The Little Things Matter
Sometimes it’s the small, thoughtful features that make a car easier to live with.
- The "Walk-Away" Battle: The Honda HR-V features Walk-Away Auto Lock, a lifesaver for those who forget to lock their doors. The Proton X50 counters this with Proximity Lock/Unlock and Remote Engine Start via the Proton Link app, allowing you to cool the cabin before you even step inside.
- The "Power" Battle: While both the X50 and J5 offer wireless charging, the Jaecoo J5 stands out with a standard 50-watt Qi wireless charger. For its competitors, this convenience is a premium addition rather than a standard one. In the Proton X50, the Qi wireless charger is a Flagship-exclusive feature found on the driver's side of the center console. Similarly, while the 2025 Honda HR-V facelift introduced a Qi wireless charger, it is reserved specifically for the highest-specification e:HEV RS variant.
- The "Loading" Battle: While the Jaecoo J5 includes a powered tailgate as standard equipment, its rivals reserve this feature for higher-end trims. The Proton X50 offers a powered tailgate specifically on the Premium and Flagship variants. However, the Honda HR-V takes convenience a step further; the V and RS variants come equipped with a hands-free powered tailgate that includes a "walk-away close" function, making it the only one of the three explicitly cited for hands-free loading.
5. The Ride & Handling War: Comfort vs. Sport

It’s not just about the engine; it’s about the specific engineering choices that define how these SUVs handle Malaysian roads.
- Proton X50 (The Adaptive Performer): Sticking with its reliable MacPherson strut and torsion beam setup, the X50 now features a new Adaptive Drive Mode that auto-tunes itself to your driving style. Paired with a 7-speed wet DCT and a 0–100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds, it remains the benchmark for raw responsiveness and high-speed stability.
- Honda HR-V (The Precision Specialist): While it also uses a torsion beam, Honda wins on steering tech. Variable Gear Ratio (VGR) is now standard from the E variant for better maneuverability, while Agile Handling Assist (AHA) across the range ensures cornering precision. The e:HEV RS has also been tweaked for a sportier engine note and sharper throttle response.
- Jaecoo J5 (The Premium Hardware Challenger): The J5 disrupts the segment by swapping the common torsion beam for a sophisticated independent multi-link rear suspension. It doubles down on refinement with acoustic double-glazed front windows as standard and a 2,620 mm wheelbase (10 mm longer than the HR-V) for a more balanced, "big car" ride quality.
6. Unique Selling Points (USPs): What Makes Them Stand Out?
If you’re still undecided, these "Special Sauce" features are the defining characteristics of each SUV:
- Jaecoo J5 (The "Pet-Friendly" Pioneer): The J5 is the only SUV in this segment to lead with a "pet-friendly" marketing focus. Its cabin features TÜV-certified anti-bacterial and scratch-resistant faux leather upholstery, specifically chosen to withstand the wear and tear of animal companions. To further support this, Jaecoo offers specialized accessories like pet carriers, nets, and mats. The cabin is topped with a standard panoramic glass roof, designed to keep the interior feeling bright and spacious.
- Honda HR-V (The "Hybrid & Versatility" Master): Honda’s USP remains its engineering focus on efficiency and interior flexibility. It is the only model in this trio to offer a full hybrid (e:HEV) powertrain, which uses an electric motor as the primary drive source for a more responsive feel. This is complemented by the legendary Ultra Seat function, which allows the rear seats to be folded or flipped up to accommodate tall items like potted plants, a level of versatility that is unique in the B-SUV segment.
- Proton X50 (The "Connected Tech" Leader): The X50 positions itself as the high-tech "gadget" choice. Its standout feature is the "Aisyah" Voice Assistant, which was developed specifically to understand Bahasa Malaysia, including four different regional dialects like Kelantanese. For those who find urban maneuvering difficult, the Flagship variant includes an improved Auto Park Assist system, which can automatically steer the car into parking spots—a premium feature that remains a rarity at this price point.

Ultimately, choosing between these three comes down to your lifestyle "personality." If you’re a tech enthusiast who wants class-leading power and a car that can park itself, the Proton X50 remains the bang-for-your-buck performance king. If you’re an urban pragmatist who values fuel economy and needs the unmatched flexibility of the Ultra Seats for those occasional IKEA or nursery runs, the Honda HR-V is your safest bet.
However, if you’re looking for a "rugged luxury" aesthetic with a massive boot, pet-friendly interior, and premium hardware like independent multi-link suspension, the Jaecoo J5 is a formidable new challenger that proves you don’t have to sacrifice style for utility.
