How is NCD Calculated in Malaysia? The 2026 Cheat Sheet to Protecting Your 55% Discount

NCD (No Claim Discount) is a reward for being a safe driver. If you don’t make a claim on your insurance for a year, you get a discount on the following year’s premium. In Malaysia, for private cars, this discount peaks at 55%, potentially saving you thousands of Ringgit over time.

How is the NCD rate calculated for my car?

The discount follows a fixed "staircase" set by Bank Negara Malaysia. You move up one level for every consecutive year you remain claim-free:

Which claims will "reset" my NCD to 0%?

Most people think any claim kills their NCD, but that's a myth. Your NCD only resets to 0% if:

  • You are at fault: You hit another car or object.
  • Own Damage (OD) Claim: You claim for repairs where no other party is involved (e.g., hitting your own gate).
  • Third-Party Claim: Someone else claims against your insurance because you caused the accident.

Can I make a claim and still keep my 55% NCD?

Yes!  There are "safe zones" where your NCD remains untouched:

  • Windscreen Claims: If you have the Windscreen Add-on, you can replace your glass as many times as your coverage allows without touching your NCD.
  • Special Perils (Natural Disasters): If you have this add-on, claiming for flood, falling trees, or landslides will NOT reset your NCD.
  • Fire & Theft: Standard comprehensive policies usually allow you to claim for a stolen car or fire damage without losing your NCD.
  • OD-KFK (Own Damage Knock-for-Knock): If the police confirm the other driver is 100% at fault, you can claim from your own insurer to speed up repairs, and your NCD remains safe!

Should I repair my car "sendiri" or use insurance?

This is the "Smart Driver’s Math." Before calling your insurer, ask: "Is the repair cost cheaper than the discount I'll lose over the next 5 years?"

The Rule of Thumb: If the repair is RM500 but your 55% NCD saves you RM1,200 next year—pay for it yourself.

The Reset Cost: If you lose 55% NCD, it takes 5 years of higher premiums to get it back. Always calculate the "5-year loss" before claiming for small scratches.

If I sell my car and don't buy a new one for 5 years, does my NCD "burn"?

Yes, it will eventually burn. NCD is tied to you, not the car, but it has an "expiry date" if it's not attached to an active policy.

The NCD "De-escalation" Schedule:

If you sell your car and don't transfer the NCD to a new vehicle, it drops one level every year:

  • Year 1 of no car: Stays at 55%
  • Year 2: Drops to 45%
  • Year 3: Drops to 38.33%
  • Year 4: Drops to 30%
  • Year 5: Drops to 25%
  • Year 6: Resets to 0% (Burned).

What is the "smartest practice" for this?

If you won't be buying a car for years, you can't "freeze" it forever, but you can be strategic:

  • Transfer to a Family Car: If you have a spouse or parent with a car registered in your name, transfer your 55% NCD to that car immediately to keep it "active."
  • Request an NCD Withdrawal: When you sell your car, get the NCD Withdrawal Endorsement from your insurer. This is your "proof of rank." Even if you buy a car 3 years later, you can start at 38% instead of 0%.
  • The "Cheap Car" Move: Some owners buy a very cheap second-hand car (e.g., an old Kancil) just to keep the 55% NCD running under their name.

Is your NCD working for you?

Understanding how NCD is calculated in Malaysia is the difference between being a "blur" driver and a smart car owner. By reaching that 55% milestone, you are essentially getting a half-price discount on your car's protection every single year.

To recap the smartest practices:

  • Protect the discount: Use add-ons like Windscreen and Special Perils so your NCD stays safe even if life happens.
  • Do the math: Only claim insurance if the repair cost is significantly higher than the 5-year value of your NCD.
  • Don't let it burn: If you sell your car, transfer that NCD to a family car or get a withdrawal endorsement immediately.
