Shopping for a budget-friendly car? Perhaps you’re buying your first one? Or simply seeking a daily runabout? Fortunately, the sweet spot in Malaysia for such usually commands anywhere between RM30k to RM50k. In this range, three choices dominate the conversation, those being the Proton Saga, Perodua Bezza, and Perodua Axia.

With the 2026 Proton Saga MC3 officially launched and hitting showroom floors soon, things are getting even more exciting. So which one actually gives you the most value? Here’s our take on things…

Why Myvi Isn’t Here

Firstly, we’ll address the metaphorical elephant in the room - the absence of a certain ‘King’ hatchback choice. While Malaysians love the Perodua Myvi, key desirable variants command north of the RM50k mark.

Since this guide is strictly centred on affordable cars tagged under RM50k, we’ll the comparison stays between Saga, Bezza, and Axia only.

1. Real Ownership Cost: More Than the Price Tag

Buying a car isn’t just about the selling price. You’ll also deal with monthly instalments, road tax, insurance, service costs, and of course, fuel. Most loan calculations assume a 10% downpayment and around 3% interest, depending on your bank and credit score.

Here’s the good news: Malaysia’s updated Hire Purchase Act (HPAA) will switch car loans from the old “flat rate” method to a fairer effective interest rate. You basically pay interest based on your remaining balance. So if you settle early, you save more.

Even existing loan holders are expected to enjoy fairer early-settlement rebates starting around Q1 2026.

2. Road Tax & Insurance: Capacity Matters

Insurance depends on your NCD and car price, but road tax is mostly about engine size (capacity). A smaller engine equals cheaper tax. Drivers in Sabah and Sarawak pay even less, as do folks in Labuan, Langkawi, and Pangkor - they benefit with a 50% discount. Cars with engines below 1.0-litre (1,000cc) in said duty-free zones only pay RM20.

3. Maintenance: Who Costs the Least?

The Axia is still the cheapest to maintain overall, especially the manual version - Axia E @ Axia Rahmah. Naturally, the Bezza 1.3L has higher maintenance costs, mainly during major services at 40k and 80k km.

The 2026 Saga MC3 hasn’t released its full service price list yet, but Proton has confirmed a few things.  Service is every 10,000 km or six months, there's no more 1,000 km break-in service, and the new 1.5L i-GT engine uses a timing chain which saves you money long-term.

4. Fuel Efficiency: Axia Still Wins

On BUDI95 at RM1.99/L, the Axia remains the most economical, using under 4L/100km. The trade-off is performance as it only has 67 hp and 91 Nm. The Bezza 1.3L, on the other hand, gives a nice balance of power and efficiency.

As for the Saga MC3, it uses more fuel but offers the best performance thanks to its 1.5L mill. If you drive a lot on highways or need extra push for overtaking, then the Saga is a better bet.

5. Space & Practicality

The Saga has the most spacious cabin, especially in rear-seat width - welcoming trait for taller or bigger passengers. The range-topping Premium variant loses a bit of headroom due to the curtain airbags, but said robbed space is negligible to say the least.

The Bezza is the king of boot space with 508 litres available, making it ideal for families with strollers or people who travel often. The Axia has the smallest boot, but it is still surprisingly practical thanks to 60:40 split-folding rear seats - a feature it shares with the Bezza.

6. Safety: Choose Wisely

Safety really depends on the variant you pick.

The Bezza 1.0 G and Axia 1.0 E Manual only offer basic safety with two airbags and no ESC. We’ll add the Axia makes do without anti-lock brakes (ABS) even. Either is arguably best for slow, gentle city use.

The recommended minimum is the variants with both ABS and ESC, like the Saga Standard/Executive, Axia G/X/SE, and Bezza 1.3 X/AV.

For the safest picks, go for the Saga 1.5 Premium (2026) or Axia AV. Both come with six airbags and full ADAS safety features like AEB. The Saga Premium even adds blind spot monitoring and passed ASEAN NCAP’s motorcycle AEB test, marking the first Malaysian car to do so.

7. Interior & Tech

The new Saga MC3 is the most modern inside as it brings an interactive 9-inch touchscreen (Executive variant onwards) brimmed with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and rear USB ports.

The Bezza and Axia are functional but basic. There's no full smartphone mirroring tech here, and fewer features overall. However, there are plenty of ways to bolster this from the aftermarket side of things, but tread this warranty-voiding path carefully.

8. Resale Value

Perodua still leads here. Both the Axia and Bezza hold their value extremely well because they’re fuel-efficient, reliable, and cheaper to maintain. Saga resale values have improved in recent years, but P2’s duo still has the edge here.

So which one is both high-quality and easy on the wallet?

Pick the Proton Saga if you want good performance, high-tech amenities, strong safety, and a spacious cabin. Go for the Perodua Bezza instead should a big boot, good resale value, and balance between power and efficiency be priorities. Opt for the Perodua Axia if you seek ultra-low running and ownership costs, frugal fuel economy, and something small zippy to tackle the urban jungle with.

Ultimately, it all depends on your lifestyle. With the new 2026 Saga MC3 joining the race though, the under-RM50k segment is set to be more competitive than ever.
