Proton Makes History: Malaysia’s First Passenger Car Maker to Secure ISO 50001 Certification
![]()
While the headlines are often dominated by new product launches and sales figures, PROTON has just secured a victory that defines the future of Malaysian manufacturing. The national automaker has officially become the first passenger vehicle manufacturer in Malaysia to achieve the ISO 50001: 2018 certification for Energy Management Systems (EnMS).
Awarded by the British Standards Institution (BSI), this landmark certification isn't just a plaque on the wall; it is a strategic move that aligns PROTON with the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Act 2024 (EECA 2024) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
The 2% Strategy: Turning Efficiency into Competitiveness

In an increasingly competitive market, sustainability is no longer a luxury, it’s a requirement for long-term survival. PROTON’s new framework is implemented across its massive manufacturing operations, including the Tanjung Malim plant, which has an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles.
Key highlights of PROTON’s energy roadmap include:
- Efficiency Targets: PROTON is targeting a 2% annual improvement in energy efficiency, ensuring that growth is balanced with sustainability.
- Energy Digitalisation: The plant now utilizes real-time monitoring and digital tools to optimize energy consumption at the per-vehicle level.
- Solar Leadership: Building on the 2021 installation of Malaysia’s largest bi-facial solar parking lot, the array has already reduced CO2 emissions by 48,453 tonnes—the equivalent of removing 10,500 ICE vehicles from the road for a year.
- Future-Proofing Tech: The roadmap includes the future implementation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to manage peak demand and further stabilize factory overheads.
Setting the Standard for the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV)
As the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV) evolves into a regional hub for advanced manufacturing, PROTON is setting the benchmark. By adopting a structured framework to monitor and control energy performance, the brand is ensuring its operations remain future-ready and adaptable to global standards.

"As the first passenger vehicle manufacturer in Malaysia to achieve ISO 50001: 2018, we are setting clearer benchmarks for energy performance, not just within our operations, but across the broader automotive ecosystem," says Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Deputy CEO of PROTON.
The Consumer Takeaway: Why This Matters to You
For the average driver, a more efficient factory means a more resilient brand. By reducing utility waste and optimizing production at the shopfloor level, across Stamping, Body, Painting, and Assembly, PROTON is protecting itself against the rising costs of industrial energy. This "behind-the-scenes" win is what allows a national brand to maintain its Innovative Technology and Reliability while staying competitive against global newcomers.
