Your Used Car Could Be Worth More Than You Think. Here's What 10 Owners Got Through Consignment

CariCarz AutoMall used car consignment feature

RM50,806. That's the difference between what one Zeekr 009 owner received through consignment and the car's estimated trade-in value. Quite a gap, isn't it?

And before you think this only applies to expensive cars, a Perodua Axia owner recorded a difference of RM6,550, while a Proton Persona owner saw RM8,000.

These are among 10 selected successful consignment sales from CariCarz AutoMall's records, with a combined difference of RM179,157 compared with estimated market trade-in values. That's an average gap of nearly RM18,000 per car!

And here's the interesting part: we're talking about everything from everyday Malaysian cars to premium EVs. Which raises a question worth asking: could your used car be worth more than the first trade-in offer you receive?

What Did These 10 Car Owners Receive?

Let's start with the seller take-back amounts recorded in the selected CariCarz AutoMall transactions, and how they compare with estimated trade-in values for the same vehicles.

The take-back figures represent the reported amounts attributed to the respective owners through consignment, including any applicable payment or loan settlement arrangements. They should not be confused with the vehicles' full selling prices, original purchase prices or profits.

Why The Axia And Persona Matter Just As Much As The Zeekr

Sure, the Zeekr 009's RM290,806 take-back is the biggest figure in this selection. The BMW iX3 and Honda Civic e:HEV RS also recorded six-figure amounts. But the more relatable examples might be sitting at the other end of the table.

Take the 2021 Perodua Axia SE, which returned RM23,550, or the 2023 Proton Persona Executive, which returned RM30,000. Neither is a luxury vehicle, yet both were among the successful consignment transactions featured here. Then there's the Proton S70 Flagship X at RM64,505 and even a 2016 Subaru Forester 2.0i at RM24,000.

In other words, this selection isn't just a showcase of premium vehicles. It includes familiar Malaysian models across different price brackets and vehicle ages.

There's another interesting detail. Five of the 10 featured vehicles are EVs: the Zeekr 009, BMW iX3, Chery Omoda E5, BYD Atto 3 and BYD Dolphin.

That doesn't mean every EV or everyday car will achieve the same result. What it does show is that consignment can be an option worth exploring across a surprisingly varied mix of vehicles.

We've also previously examined why nearly-new vehicles and EV owners may want to consider consignment when planning their next sale.

How Much More Than A Trade-In?

The figures in our comparison above tell an interesting story. Based on CariCarz AutoMall's estimated trade-in benchmarks, the Zeekr 009 recorded the biggest difference at RM50,806, followed by the BMW iX3 at RM29,488 and Honda Civic e:HEV RS at RM20,008.

But you don't need to own a premium car for the difference to be worth noticing. Even the Proton Persona and Perodua Axia showed gaps of RM8,000 and RM6,550, respectively.

In fact, all 10 selected transactions recorded seller take-back amounts above their respective estimated trade-in benchmarks.

The figures are not comparisons against actual dealer offers, so they shouldn't be treated as guaranteed additional earnings. Still, they illustrate why it's worth checking what your car could fetch through consignment before accepting a trade-in offer.

A closer look at the differences between both selling methods and what Malaysian motorists should consider.

How Does Consignment Work?

Unlike a conventional trade-in, where a dealer typically buys your vehicle directly, consignment involves appointing a service provider to help market the car and find a buyer. The attraction is straightforward: instead of immediately accepting a dealer's purchase price, the owner can explore a sale through a different route.

However, the process and terms matter. Before proceeding with CariCarz AutoMall or any consignment provider, owners should clarify how their car will be marketed, who handles buyer enquiries, what charges apply and how the final take-back amount is determined.

It's also worth asking about the expected selling timeline, vehicle handover arrangements and when payment will be made after a successful sale. These details can make a big difference when deciding whether consignment suits your circumstances.

Trade-In Or Consignment: Which Makes More Sense?

There isn't a single answer that works for everyone. For some owners, convenience matters most. Others may be willing to spend more time exploring the possibility of a better selling outcome.

OPTION 01
TRADE-IN
PRIORITY: CONVENIENCE

Sell your vehicle directly to a dealer, often when purchasing another car.

Worth considering if:
✓ You want a straightforward transaction
✓ You need to replace your car soon
✓ Convenience is your main priority
OPTION 02
CONSIGNMENT
PRIORITY: POTENTIAL VALUE

Appoint a service provider to help market your car and find a buyer.

Worth considering if:
✓ You have some flexibility on timing
✓ You want to explore another selling route
✓ You prefer assistance with the sale

Consignment does not guarantee a higher return, and a successful sale may take time. Vehicle condition, mileage, pricing, demand and the terms of the service all play a part.

That's why comparing both options is worthwhile, particularly when you're dealing with an asset worth thousands or even hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

Could Your Used Car Be Worth More?

CariCarz AutoMall consignment informational visual

Possibly. But the answer depends on your particular car and the offers available to you. What these 10 selected CariCarz AutoMall transactions demonstrate is that consignment isn't restricted to one type of vehicle. From an everyday Axia to a premium electric MPV, owners have successfully sold a wide range of models through the service.

The next question isn't whether every owner can achieve the same result. It's whether your own car might be worth exploring through consignment before you settle on a trade-in offer.

THE TAKEAWAY
Your first selling offer doesn't have to be your final decision.

Compare trade-in and consignment, understand the fees and timeline, and find out which route makes the most sense for your vehicle.
