Reviews

Summary

The BMW XM is BMW M’s flagship plug-in hybrid Sports Activity Vehicle and the first standalone BMW M model since the original M1. It combines a high-performance V8 with electrification, luxury-focused five-seat packaging and a rear-biased M xDrive system.

The current Malaysian range has been simplified to a single BMW XM Label, priced from RM1,554,800 on-the-road without insurance, or RM1,650,500 with BMW Service & Repair Inclusive. It replaces the previous regular XM and XM Label Red as the sole locally offered variant.

Its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 and integrated electric motor produce 550 KW (738 HP / 748 PS) and 1,000 NM, making it the most powerful series-production BMW M model currently offered in Malaysia. A 29.5 KWH gross / 25.7 KWH usable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 76-82 KM WLTP pure-electric range.

Interior

Dashboard

The XM uses the BMW Curved Display, combining a 12.3-INCH digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-INCH central touchscreen.

BMW Operating System 8.5 provides the main interface, while M-specific graphics display performance and hybrid information.

The dashboard combines modern digital displays with distinctive geometric trim and extensive ambient lighting.

Centre Console

The centre console houses the M Hybrid controls, iDrive controller, storage compartments and cup holders.

Dedicated buttons allow the driver to configure the drivetrain, suspension, steering and braking characteristics.

The M Hybrid button also provides access to different electric and hybrid operating strategies.

Instrument Cluster

The 12.3-INCH fully digital instrument display provides M-specific layouts.

Information includes speed, engine revs, selected gear, electric range, battery state, hybrid energy flow and driver-assistance status.

A BMW Head-Up Display projects additional driving and navigation information directly into the driver’s field of vision.

Seats

The front features M multifunction seats with extensive electric adjustment and pronounced side bolsters.

BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery is available in colours including Night Blue, Silverstone, Deep Lagoon and Black.

Comfort cushions are now standard with all upholstery selections.

The rear M Lounge uses a continuous sculpted seating surface with deeply recessed outer positions and distinctive diamond-pattern stitching.

Space

The XM accommodates five occupants.

Its 3,105 MM wheelbase provides generous rear legroom, while the wide 2,005 MM body offers substantial shoulder room.

Unlike many performance SUVs, the XM places particular emphasis on rear-seat comfort through its dedicated M Lounge design.

Steering Functions

An M leather multifunction steering wheel provides controls for audio, driver assistance and vehicle settings.

Dedicated M1 and M2 buttons allow customised combinations of drivetrain, steering and chassis settings to be recalled instantly.

Paddle shifters control the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

Storage Space

Storage includes a large glove compartment, centre-console storage and substantial door pockets.

Additional rear storage areas are incorporated around the M Lounge.

Despite the high-performance positioning, the XM remains practical enough for everyday luxury-SUV use.

Cup Holders

Two cup holders are positioned within the front centre console.

Additional cup holders are integrated into the folding rear centre armrest.

Large door pockets provide further bottle storage.

Charging Ports

Multiple USB-C charging ports are distributed throughout the cabin.

Wireless smartphone charging is also provided.

The high-voltage vehicle charging connection is located externally and supports AC charging only.

Build Quality

The cabin combines BMW Individual Merino leather, Alcantara, metallic trim and extensive soft-touch materials.

A major visual highlight is the sculpted three-dimensional M Alcantara headliner, indirectly illuminated through the ambient-lighting system.

The latest XM Label also receives additional acoustic insulation to further improve refinement.

Boot Space

Luggage capacity stands at 527 L with the rear seats upright.

Folding the rear seatbacks increases maximum cargo capacity to approximately 1,820 L.

The rear seats use a 40:20:40 split, allowing longer items to be carried while retaining passenger seating.

Exterior

Body Dimensions

The BMW XM measures 5,110 MM long, 2,005 MM wide and 1,755 MM tall, with a substantial 3,105 MM wheelbase.

Width including mirrors reaches 2,235 MM, while kerb weight stands at approximately 2,795 KG.

Its substantial proportions position the XM above conventional BMW X-series performance SUVs in both physical presence and mass.

Front View

The front is dominated by an enormous BMW kidney grille with Iconic Glow illumination.

Split lighting separates the slim daytime running lights from the main headlamp units positioned lower within the bumper.

Large air openings support cooling requirements for the high-output V8 hybrid drivetrain, while the Label receives dark exterior detailing that emphasises its performance positioning.

Rear View

The rear is distinguished by two pairs of vertically stacked hexagonal exhaust outlets, the first arrangement of its kind on a BMW M production model.

Slim tail lamps wrap around the rear corners, while subtle BMW logos are etched into the upper corners of the rear glass as a reference to the BMW M1.

A powered tailgate provides access to the large luggage compartment.

Headlamps

The XM features adaptive LED headlamps with BMW Selective Beam.

Automatic high-beam management selectively masks other road users while maintaining maximum useful illumination.

Slim LED daytime running lights form a distinctive upper lighting signature.

Tail Lamps

Full-LED rear lamps feature a narrow, three-dimensional design.

Their horizontal graphics emphasise the vehicle’s width and contrast with the vertical exhaust treatment below.

Dynamic lighting sequences accompany locking and unlocking.

Side Mirror

Exterior mirrors are electrically adjustable, heated and automatically folding.

Automatic dimming and memory-linked positioning are also provided.

Integrated LED turn indicators are incorporated into the mirror housings.

Brakes

The XM Label uses M Compound braking hardware.

The front axle features large ventilated discs with six-piston fixed callipers, while the rear uses ventilated discs with single-piston floating callipers.

Regenerative braking from the hybrid system works together with the conventional friction brakes.

Wheels

The latest Malaysian XM Label rides on distinctive 23-INCH M light-alloy wheels in Star-spoke Style 1096 M, finished in high-gloss black.

Tyres measure approximately 275/35 R23 at the front and 315/30 R23 at the rear.

The wide staggered setup provides the traction required to manage the XM’s 1,000 NM system output.

Features

Active Safety

Active safety systems include ABS, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Cornering Brake Control and near-actuator wheel-slip limitation.

Autonomous Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning monitor vehicles and vulnerable road users ahead.

M xDrive, the M Sport differential and active chassis systems work together to maintain traction under aggressive acceleration.

Passive Safety

The XM features front, front-side and full-length curtain airbags.

Five three-point seat belts, pretensioners, load limiters and ISOFIX child-seat mounting points are also provided.

BMW’s high-strength passenger structure and integrated high-voltage battery protection provide additional crash protection.

Drive Modes

The M Hybrid system provides HYBRID, ELECTRIC and eCONTROL operating strategies.

HYBRID automatically manages the combustion engine and electric motor, while ELECTRIC allows pure-electric driving at speeds of up to 140 KM/H.

eCONTROL can maintain or increase the battery’s state of charge for later electric driving.

M xDrive additionally offers 4WD, 4WD Sport and 4WD Sand, while M Setup allows separate configuration of engine, chassis, steering and braking behaviour.

Infotainment

The 14.9-INCH central touchscreen runs BMW Operating System 8.5.

Functions include BMW Navigation, Intelligent Personal Assistant, connected services and Over-the-Air software updates.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported.

BMW Digital Key Plus allows compatible smartphones to function as the vehicle key.

Driver Assistance

The XM Label features Driving Assistant Professional.

Systems include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning.

Front Collision Warning, Evasion Assistant and Speed Limit information are also incorporated.

Parking Assistant Plus adds front and rear sensors together with a 360-degree camera system and three-dimensional surround view.

Sound System

The XM features a premium 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System producing approximately 1,500 W.

Illuminated speaker elements contribute to the cabin atmosphere.

BMW IconicSounds Electric, developed with Hans Zimmer, provides an artificial soundscape during electric and hybrid driving.

Performance

Engine

The XM Label uses a 4,395 CC M TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine.

The combustion engine alone develops 430 KW (577 HP / 585 PS) and 750 NM between 1,800 and 5,400 RPM.

A synchronous electric motor integrated into the transmission contributes 145 KW (194 HP / 197 PS) and 280 NM, with an effective 450 NM available at the transmission input through its pre-gearing stage.

Combined system output reaches 550 KW (738 HP / 748 PS) and 1,000 NM.

Transmission

Power is transmitted through an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with Drivelogic.

The electric motor is integrated directly into the transmission housing.

This enables purely electric driving, regenerative braking and immediate electric torque assistance during acceleration.

Drivetrain

The XM Label uses M xDrive all-wheel drive.

Its setup is rear-biased during performance driving and works with an electronically controlled M Sport rear differential.

4WD Sport sends a greater proportion of torque to the rear axle, while 4WD Sand alters torque distribution and stability-control behaviour for loose surfaces.

Acceleration

The XM Label accelerates from 0-100 KM/H in 3.8 seconds.

BMW also quotes 3.5 seconds with one-foot rollout excluded.

Maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 KM/H, while pure-electric operation is possible up to 140 KM/H.

Fuel Consumption

The XM Label records approximately 2.0-2.3 L/100 KM WLTP weighted combined fuel consumption when regularly charged.

Electricity consumption stands at approximately 32.6-33.7 KWH/100 KM.

Its high-voltage lithium-ion battery has 29.5 KWH gross and 25.7 KWH usable capacity, providing approximately 76-82 KM WLTP pure-electric range.

The latest Malaysian XM Label now receives 11 KW three-phase AC charging, allowing a 0-100% recharge in approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.

The XM does not support DC fast charging.

Comfort

Convenience

Standard convenience features include Comfort Access, BMW Digital Key Plus, powered front seats with memory, automatic wipers and an electrically operated tailgate.

The animated Welcome Light Carpet with XM lettering illuminates the ground beside the vehicle when occupants approach.

Extensive seat adjustment and memory functions further improve long-distance usability.

Rear Air Vents

The XM features four-zone automatic climate control.

Rear occupants receive dedicated air vents and independent temperature controls.

This complements the M Lounge’s emphasis on rear-passenger comfort.

Ride Comfort

The XM uses double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link rear axle.

Adaptive M Suspension Professional combines electronically controlled dampers with a 48-V active roll stabilisation system.

The latest XM Label also receives a retuned chassis intended to improve steering and road feedback.

Integral Active Steering turns the rear wheels opposite the fronts at lower speeds for improved manoeuvrability and in the same direction at higher speeds for greater stability.

Sound Insulation

Additional acoustic insulation has been introduced on the latest XM Label to reduce tyre, wind and powertrain noise.

Pure-electric driving further allows the XM to move almost silently during urban journeys.

When Sport or Sport Plus is selected, the M Sport exhaust and BMW IconicSounds Electric deliberately introduce more drivetrain character into the cabin.

Wrap Up

Conclusion

The BMW XM Label now represents the entire Malaysian XM range and combines BMW M’s most powerful production drivetrain with an unusually luxury-focused SUV interior.

Its 550 KW (738 HP / 748 PS) and 1,000 NM M Hybrid system delivers a 3.8-second 0-100 KM/H time despite a kerb weight approaching 2.8 tonnes.

The 25.7 KWH usable battery and approximately 76-82 KM WLTP electric range make daily electric commuting possible, while the upgrade to 11 KW AC charging cuts a complete recharge to under three hours.

The XM’s strengths extend well beyond acceleration, with Adaptive M Suspension Professional, 48-V active roll stabilisation, Integral Active Steering, M xDrive and an M Sport differential giving the enormous SUV unusually sophisticated chassis control.

Inside, the M Lounge, Merino leather, illuminated Alcantara headliner, BMW Curved Display and 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system create one of BMW M’s most extravagant cabins.

Its greatest limitation is price. At RM1,554,800 before the extended service package, the XM Label occupies exceptionally expensive territory, but it also stands apart as BMW M’s most powerful and most extroverted plug-in hybrid SUV.
