Malaysia receives a single fully imported 2.5G PHEV AWD High Plus six-seat variant. Its current selling price is RM295,000, translating to RM296,610.40 on-the-road without insurance for private registration in Peninsular Malaysia.

Its plug-in hybrid drivetrain combines a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 241 KW (323 HP) and 500 NM. A 17.8 KWH lithium-ion battery provides 65 KM NEDC pure-electric range.

The cabin uses a horizontal and minimalist dashboard layout shared conceptually with the smaller CX-60.

A 12.3-INCH digital instrument display sits ahead of the driver, while a separate 12.3-INCH Mazda Connect infotainment display is positioned centrally.

Wood veneer, aluminium detailing and soft-touch materials reinforce Mazda’s increasingly premium interior direction.

A wide and high centre console separates the front occupants.

Its 323 HP and 500 NM system output gives the 2.3-tonne SUV a respectable 6.8-second 0-100 KM/H time, while the 17.8 KWH battery provides 65 KM NEDC electric range for shorter daily journeys.

The six-seat Malaysian specification is particularly well equipped, with Nappa leather, heated and ventilated second-row captain chairs, twin 12.3-inch displays, Head-Up Display, 12-speaker Bose audio, panoramic roof and comprehensive i-ACTIVSENSE assistance technology.

At RM296,610.40 OTR without insurance, it is considerably more expensive than the outgoing CX-8, but also substantially more sophisticated in platform design, drivetrain technology and interior execution.

Its main limitations are the relatively modest electric range, 7.2 KW AC-only charging and high 2,342 KG kerb weight. Nevertheless, buyers wanting a premium Japanese six-seat SUV with PHEV capability and a distinctly rear-biased driving character will find the CX-80 one of Mazda Malaysia’s most ambitious products to date.
