Mazda CX-80

Highly anticipated, the latest offering from the Japanese automaker, Mazda, the all-new Mazda CX-80, officially launched in Malaysia.

The D-segment (large-size SUV – three rows) Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) underpins Mazda’s Large Products Technology platform (SKYACTIV Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture).

Fully imported (CBU – Japan), available via Bermaz Motor (BAuto) is one variant (CX-80 2.5G PHEV AWD High Plus – MYR 296,610).

Price (OTR, w/o insurance) includes a manufacturer’s warranty (five years/100,000 KM), a PHEV battery warranty (eight years/160,000 KM) and a maintenance program (free: five years/100,000 KM).

Exterior colours (single-tone: Melting Copper, Jet Black, Platinum Quartz, Rhodium White, Artisan Red). Interior colour (dual-tone: Black-Tan).

The all-new CX-80 gets an angular, cascading and tiered dashboard, linked to a high-rising-wide centre console (armrest, wireless charger, vehicle telematics).

Soft-/hard-touched (dash, steering wheel, centre console, doors), it sees suede upholstery in one colour scheme (dual-tone: Black-Tan) with contrast trims (Gloss Black, Aluminium, Wood veneer).

Equipped are the driver/central displays (instrument cluster, infotainment), air-conditioning vents (rectangular: vertical corners, horizontal centre) and an ambient light system (LED).

Inclusively, the layout is simple and straight-forward with accessibilities purposefully arranged (driver-centric, passenger-oriented).

Installed is a 12.3-Inch colour TFT LCD fully digital (Multi-Information Display – MID) driver display (instrument cluster). Included is a Windscreen-Head-Up Display (W-HUD – memory: Driver Personalisation System).

Features are vehicle telematics, Bluetooth, navigation, voice recognition and customisable interface (drive mode dependent).

Comfortable, the interior (three rows – 2-2-2) sees Nappa leather upholstery in one colour scheme (single-tone: Tan) with contrast quilt-stitching (Diamond pattern).

The first row gets electric-powered (driver/passenger: multi-way-adjust, driver-memory – Driver Personalisation System, driver-ventilation-heating) bolstered seats.

The second row gets electric-powered (recline-adjust, ventilation-heating, third row easy-access switch) individual seats (captain chairs).

Weighing in at 2,342 KG, the all-new CX-80 stands at 4,995 MM long, 1,890 MM wide, 1,705 MM tall and with a wheelbase spanning 3,120 MM.

Dynamically solid (Mazda Kodo Design), it parades a seamlessly curvaceous exterior, emphasised by cleanly and roundly cut surfaces.

The long-overhang front-end sees a formed bonnet, muscular quarter panels (flared fenders, vents) and a sculpted bumper (grille: vertical inserts, wing trim, Mazda emblem – vents: lower-centre, corners).

Accentuations, body clad (Black: bumper lip – body-colour: fenders, side sills) and body trims (Black: grille inserts, bumper vents, side mirrors, B/C-pillars – body-colour: door handles – Chrome: window surrounds, grille wing, fender vents, Mazda emblem).

Solidly sculpted (Mazda Kodo Design), it continues the seamlessly curvaceous profile, emphasised by roundly cut and horizontally symmetrical surfaces.

The short-overhang rear-end sees a straight cut roofline (roof-edge spoiler), muscular quarter panels (flared fenders), a bulbously tapered tailgate (Mazda/CX-80 emblems) and a covered bumper (diffuser: hidden exhausts).

Accentuations, body clad (Black: diffuser – body-colour: fenders, side sills) and body trims (Black: bottom roof-edge spoiler, B/C-pillars – body-colour: upper roof-edge spoiler, door handles – Chrome: window surrounds, Mazda/CX-80 emblem).

Sunken, the headlamps are housed roundly sharp and inward-tilted with L-shaped light signature. Installed are full LED (adaptive projector) units.

Features are automatic On/Off/levelling/cornering, Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH), Daytime Running Lights (DRL – LED), welcome/leaving lights and sequential turn signals (LED).

Seamless, the tail lamps are framed slim, sharp and wrapped-around with L-shaped light signature. Installed are LED combination units.

Features are automatic On/Off, welcome/leaving lights and sequential turn signals (LED). Included are a high-mounted stop light (spoiler integrated) and a set of fog lamps.

The side mirrors (single-tone: Black) are electric-powered (auto-fold, adjust), with turn signals (LED), blind-spot indicators (Blind Spot Monitor – BSM) and memory (Driver Personalisation System).

Fitted are ventilated (front, rear) disc brakes. Drive is aided by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold system.

Fitted is a set of 20-Inch multi-spoke (Black) alloy rims, wrapped in 235/50 R20 (front, rear) Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance SUV tyres.

The all-new CX-80 is equipped with Mazda’s ‘i-ACTIVESENSE’ suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Installed is a 12.3-Inch HD touchscreen central display (infotainment – MZD Connect).

Features are Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (wireless), AM/FM radio, USB, Bluetooth, 5G/WiFi/WiFi hotspot, media, live navigation, voice assistant and vehicle telematics.

Entertainment is channelled via a BOSE sound system (12 speakers).

The all-new CX-80 nestles a Plug-In Hybrid (electric-petrol hybrid: PHEV) powertrain (Mazda e-SKYACTIV PHEV). 

Embedded is a 2.5-Litre inline four-cylinder 16-valve with VVT naturally aspirated (NA) direct injection DOHC petrol engine (SKYACTIV-G) and an electric motor (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor – PMSM – front-mounted).

Total system output (323 HP/241 KW, 500 NM).

Mated to the setup is an eight-speed EAT (Efficient Automatic Transmission – ECT: Electronically Controlled Transmission).

Power is transmitted to all four wheels, via Mazda’s i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive (i-ACTIV AWD) system.

Fuel tank capacity is at 70 Litres, and fuel consumption reads at 2.7 L/100 KM.

Powering the e-motor is a Lithium-Ion battery (230 V, 17.8 KWH), enabling a pure electric driving range of 65 KM (NEDC). AC charging (Type 2 – 7.2 KW) takes 2.5 hours for a 0% to 100% State-Of-Charge (SoC).

The all-new CX-80 features these conveniences.

A suitable daily driver, the ride comfortability feels flexible and firm at the same time, providing great power with agile handling.

Suspension fitted is a setup of double wishbone (front) and multi-link (rear). Incorporated is Mazda’s Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) system.

Inside and out, performance- and comfort-wise, the ride quality is satisfactory.

Good sound insulation with the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects accounted for. The cabin is well-designed, enhancing the in-car ambience.

Overall, the cabin can suppress unwanted noises well and make them barely noticeable, even when cruising through bumpy asphalts or at high speeds.

The all-new Mazda CX-80 is built with an elegantly dynamic appeal, offering appearance, space and practicality.

Curvaceous and sharply sculpted, its exterior is well-designed with roundly angular lines donating to a powerful overall character.
