GWM Ora Good Cat

One of the brand’s sought-after models, Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) latest offering, the new GWM Ora Good Cat, upgraded and launched in Malaysia.

A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the B-segment (hatchback) runner underpins GWM's dedicated Electric Vehicle (EV) platform.

Fully imported (CBU – Thailand), available via GWM Malaysia are two variants (ULTRA – RM110,500, GT – RM120,500).

Prices (OTR, w/o insurance) cover vehicle (five years/150,000 km) and EV battery-drive motor-control unit (eight years/180,000 km – 1-to-1 battery replacement: <70% health) warranties, and a free service maintenance (five years/150,000 km – labour, parts).

Sleek and sporty, it parades a roundly shaped exterior, emphasised by seamlessly aerodynamic and clean-cut contours.

The front-end sees a mildly formed bonnet (raised sides), rounded quarter panels (raised fenders) and a rounded bumper (ULTRA: slim lower grille, lip kit – GT: wide lower grille, corner cutouts, valance – Active Grille Shutters: AGS – ‘Ora’ emblem).

Accentuations, body clad (ULTRA: Black – GT: Carbon Fibre), body trims (ULTRA: Black – GT: Black-Yellow), ‘Ora’ emblem (Black-Chrome) and contrast roof (ULTRA: exterior colour dependent).

Borderline bulbous, it continues the roundly shaped profile, emphasised by symmetrically flowing surfaces and seamlessly cut lines.

The rear-end sees a mildly dipped roofline (shark fin antenna), a roof-edge spoiler (ULTRA: slim – GT: large), a roundly upright tailgate (‘GWM/’Ora Good Cat’ scripts), rounded quarter panels (raised fenders) and a rounded bumper (ULTRA: clean diffuser – GT: valance diffuser – exhaust-omitted).

Nestled (ULTRA, GT: front-mounted) is a single-electric motor (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor – PMSM) setup (ULTRA: 105 kW/143 PS, 210 Nm – GT: 126 kW/171 PS, 250 Nm).

Churning the setups is a single-speed automatic transmission (column gear shifter: right stalk).

Power is rooted to the front (ULTRA, GT) wheels, via a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) system.

Top speed is electronically capped at 150 km/h (ULTRA, GT).

Powering the e-motors is a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery (ULTRA, GT: 57.7 kWh), enabling a driving range (NEDC) of 480 km (ULTRA) and 460 km (GT).

DC charging (ULTRA, GT: CCS2 – 60 kW), takes 54 mins (ULTRA, GT) for a 0% to 80% State of Charge (SoC) and 38 mins (ULTRA, GT) for a 30% to 80% SoC. 

AC charging (ULTRA, GT: Type 2 – 6.6 kW), takes 9.0 hours for a 0% to 100% SoC.

Propping-up the e-chassis is a suspension setup of MacPherson strut (front) with stabiliser bar and torsion beam (rear).

Ride comfortability feels flexible and firm at the same time. The e-hatchback delivers a comfortable and light steering feel with smooth overall electric performance.

Good sound insulation with most of the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects accounted for. The ride is quiet, refined and the road noise is mostly muted.
