Toyota BZ4X

The Toyota bZ4X is a five-seat electric SUV offered in Malaysia as a single fully imported front-wheel-drive variant. Priced at RM220,000 on-the-road without insurance in Peninsular Malaysia, it uses a 73.1-kWh battery and produces 227 PS and 269 NM.

Toyota provides a five-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty and eight years of unlimited-mileage coverage for the battery, inverter and BEV ECU. Buyers may extend the EV warranty to ten years for RM5,700.

The redesigned dashboard features a 14-inch central touchscreen and a high-mounted seven-inch digital instrument display. Customisable 64-colour ambient lighting provides a more contemporary cabin atmosphere.

The centre console houses a dial-type shift selector, electronic parking-brake controls and two 15-W wireless smartphone chargers. An open lower tray provides additional storage and contains a USB connection and 12-volt socket.

The seven-inch full-graphic TFT display sits above the steering wheel and presents speed, battery level, remaining range and driver-assistance information. Its high position is designed to keep essential information closer to the driver’s line of sight.

Synthetic-leather upholstery is standard. Both front seats receive eight-way powered adjustment and ventilation, while the driver also gains memory and two-way powered lumbar support. The rear seats fold in a 60:40 configuration.

The 2,850-MM wheelbase and dedicated electric platform provide generous passenger space for five occupants. The flat rear floor improves legroom and makes the centre rear position more usable.

The heated three-spoke steering wheel provides audio, cruise-control, voice-command and driver-assistance controls. Tilt-and-telescopic adjustment and paddle controls for regenerative braking are also included.

Storage areas include the glovebox, large door pockets, centre-console compartments and an open tray beneath the console. The revised console provides more usable space than the previous layout.

Cup holders are integrated into the centre-console area, with additional drink storage provided through the doors and rear passenger compartment.

One front USB charging port and two rear USB ports are provided, together with a front 12-volt accessory socket. Two wireless smartphone chargers are positioned on the centre console.

Synthetic leather, soft-touch trim and ambient lighting create a clean and modern environment. The layout remains functional rather than highly decorative, with physical temperature controls retained beneath the touchscreen.

The powered tailgate opens to 452 litres of luggage capacity. The hands-free kick sensor improves access when carrying bags, while the rear seats can be folded for larger items.

The bZ4X measures 4,690 MM long, 1,860 MM wide and 1,650 MM tall, with a 2,850-MM wheelbase. It weighs 2,020 KG, provides 180 MM of ground clearance and has a 5.6-metre turning radius.

The front adopts Toyota’s hammerhead design, combining a slim upper light strip with vertically positioned main lamps. Gloss-black three-dimensional panels around the front corners and wheel arches give the electric SUV a broad and planted appearance.

The rear features a sporty roof spoiler, ducktail-style lip spoiler and a wide tailgate. The angular rear bodywork complements the black wheel-arch cladding and coupe-inspired roofline.

LED headlamps are accompanied by LED daytime-running lights and LED front turn signals. The Adaptive High-beam System automatically adjusts the lighting pattern to reduce glare for surrounding traffic.

Full-LED rear combination lamps stretch towards the centre of the tailgate, creating a wide lighting signature. LED rear fog and high-mounted brake lamps are also included.

The exterior mirrors feature powered adjustment, heating, automatic folding, memory and reverse-linked positioning. Blind-spot indicators, turn signals and foot lamps are integrated into the mirror housings.

Ventilated disc brakes are fitted at both the front and rear. They work with regenerative braking, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, Brake Assist and electronic stability control.

The Malaysian bZ4X rides on 20-inch aluminium wheels wrapped in 235/50 R20 tyres. Their aerodynamic design contributes to the vehicle’s 0.27 drag coefficient.

Standard active-safety equipment includes ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, traction control, hill-start assistance, Emergency Stop Signal and tyre-pressure monitoring.

Eight airbags are fitted, covering the front occupants, front sides, cabin curtains, driver’s knee and the area between the front seats. ISOFIX and top-tether child-seat mounting points are provided on the outer rear seats.

An Eco driving mode adjusts accelerator response and energy usage. Steering-wheel paddles allow the driver to alter regenerative-braking strength.

The 14-inch touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and selected vehicle settings. Physical temperature dials are retained for easier climate adjustment while driving.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 includes Pre-Collision System, all-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Adaptive High-beam System and Road Sign Assist.

Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Safe Exit Assist, Parking Support Brake, Advanced Park and a panoramic-view monitor are also standard.

A six-speaker audio system with an external amplifier is fitted as standard. Media can be played through Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

A front-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor produces 167 KW or 227 PS and 269 NM. Power delivery is tuned for smooth everyday acceleration rather than high-performance driving.

Power is delivered through a single-speed electric reduction drive. The electric motor provides immediate response without conventional gear changes.

The Malaysian bZ4X is offered exclusively with front-wheel drive. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration available in selected overseas markets is not offered locally.

The bZ4X accelerates from 0 to 100 KM/H in 7.4 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 160 KM/H.

Its 73.1-kWh lithium-ion battery provides up to 525 KM of WLTP range. Charging supports up to 22 KW AC and 150 KW DC through Type 2 and CCS2 connections.

Charging from 10% to 80% takes approximately 2.2 hours using a 22-KW AC charger or around 28 minutes with a compatible DC fast charger.

Convenience features include smart entry, push-button start, a panoramic glass roof, hands-free powered tailgate, digital rear-view mirror, front and rear driving recorders and dual wireless chargers.

Dual-zone automatic climate control is fitted with dedicated rear air vents. A PM2.5 filter and Panasonic nanoe X ion generator help maintain cabin air quality.

MacPherson-strut front suspension and a double-wishbone rear arrangement provide stable handling and composed ride quality. Revised suspension tuning improves comfort and body control compared with the earlier bZ4X.

A quieter electric motor, acoustic front-side glass and additional sound-insulating materials reduce wind, motor and road noise. The updated body structure also helps suppress vibration within the cabin.

The Toyota bZ4X offers a comfortable cabin, comprehensive safety equipment, a useful 525-KM WLTP range and fast 22-KW AC charging. Toyota’s nationwide service support and unlimited-mileage EV warranty coverage also provide reassurance for buyers entering electric-car ownership.

However, its RM220,000 price, front-wheel-drive-only configuration and six-speaker sound system make it less competitive against several more powerful and heavily equipped electric SUVs. The 150-KW DC charging rate is adequate but no longer class-leading. Overall, the bZ4X is best suited to buyers who prioritise Toyota ownership support, comfort and long-term reliability over outright performance or maximum equipment.
