Volvo EC40

The Volvo EC40 is the renamed successor to the C40 Recharge, retaining its distinctive coupé-SUV body while receiving updated electric powertrains and technology.

The Malaysian range comprises two locally assembled Ultra variants – EC40 Ultra Single Motor and EC40 Ultra Twin Motor – priced at RM248,888 and RM288,888 respectively, on-the-road without insurance.

The Single Motor produces 175 KW (235 HP) and 420 NM through the rear wheels, while the Twin Motor combines two motors for 300 KW (402 HP) and 670 NM with all-wheel drive.

Battery capacities stand at 70 KWH and 82 KWH, providing up to 488 KM and 554 KM WLTP range respectively.

The cabin follows Volvo’s familiar minimalist Scandinavian design philosophy.

A 12.3-INCH digital driver display sits directly ahead of the steering wheel, while a vertically oriented 9-INCH central touchscreen handles infotainment and many vehicle functions.

The latest EC40 also benefits from Volvo’s updated user interface and faster Snapdragon-based infotainment hardware.

The centre console incorporates the electronic gear selector, storage compartments, cup holders and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

A sliding armrest covers additional storage space, while the clean layout keeps physical controls to a minimum.

A 12.3-INCH fully digital instrument cluster displays speed, battery status, remaining range, navigation and driver-assistance information.

Google Maps navigation directions can be displayed directly within the driver display, reducing the need to look towards the central touchscreen.

Both variants receive electrically adjustable front comfort seats.

The driver’s seat includes memory functionality and four-way powered lumbar adjustment, while the front passenger also receives electric adjustment.

The Malaysian Ultra interior uses Charcoal Connect Suede textile and Microtech upholstery, maintaining Volvo’s leather-free approach.

The EC40 accommodates five occupants.

Its 2,702 MM wheelbase provides reasonable front and rear passenger space, with official rear legroom measuring approximately 917 MM.

The sloping roofline reduces rear headroom compared with the more upright EX40, although accommodation remains sufficient for most adults.

A multifunction steering wheel provides controls for audio, driver information, Adaptive Cruise Control and Pilot Assist.

Both tilt and telescopic steering adjustment are provided.

Steering assistance characteristics can also be adjusted through the vehicle settings.

Storage areas include front and rear door pockets, a glove compartment, centre-console storage and an underfloor compartment in the rear luggage area.

The boot incorporates a 59 L concealed storage compartment, useful for charging cables and smaller items.

Two cup holders are integrated into the front centre console.

Additional beverage storage is available for rear passengers through the folding centre armrest and door pockets.

The EC40 provides two USB-C ports at the front and another two USB-C ports for rear occupants.

A wireless smartphone charging pad is also standard.

The USB connections support device charging as well as compatible smartphone integration.

The cabin combines soft-touch surfaces with textile, Microtech and distinctive decorative inserts.

Volvo’s leather-free approach gives the EC40 a modern appearance while reducing reliance on traditional animal-based materials.

A fixed panoramic glass roof stretches across much of the cabin and contributes to a more open interior atmosphere.

Official luggage capacity stands at 404 L with the rear seats upright.

Folding the second row increases usable cargo capacity to approximately 958 L.

A further 31 L front luggage compartment is provided beneath the bonnet, while the rear boot incorporates a separate 59 L underfloor storage compartment.

The EC40 measures 4,440 MM long, 1,873 MM wide and 1,591 MM tall, with a 2,702 MM wheelbase.

Width including the exterior mirrors stands at 2,034 MM, while the turning circle measures approximately 11 M.

Running-order mass is approximately 2,065 KG for the Single Motor and 2,185 KG for the Twin Motor.

The EC40 adopts Volvo’s minimalist electric design language with a body-coloured closed front shield replacing a conventional radiator grille.

A sculpted bonnet, broad shoulders and clean lower bumper give the crossover a solid appearance while helping reduce aerodynamic drag.

Its familiar Thor’s Hammer lighting signature provides an immediate visual connection with Volvo’s wider model range.

The rear is one of the EC40’s most distinctive design elements, with its steeply sloping coupé roofline flowing into a sculpted tailgate.

Two aerodynamic spoilers are used – one at the roof and another integrated into the tailgate – while a rear diffuser helps manage airflow beneath the vehicle.

A hands-free powered tailgate is standard on the Ultra specification.

Both Malaysian variants feature Pixel LED headlamps with Adaptive Shadow Technology.

Each headlamp uses individually controlled LED elements to adapt the light pattern around surrounding traffic without unnecessarily reducing illumination.

The lamps also incorporate bending functionality to illuminate corners according to steering input.

The EC40 uses distinctive full-LED tail lamps extending vertically along the rear pillars before continuing into the tailgate.

The segmented light signature emphasises the crossover’s coupé-inspired rear profile.

A high-mounted LED brake lamp is integrated into the roof spoiler.

Exterior mirrors are electrically adjustable, heated and automatically folding.

Their settings are linked to the driver’s memory function.

Blind Spot Information System warnings are also integrated into the mirror area.

The EC40 uses disc brakes at all four corners, supported by regenerative braking from its electric drivetrain.

Standard electronic systems include ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control and traction management.

One-Pedal Drive allows stronger regenerative deceleration during everyday driving.

Both Ultra variants ride on 19-INCH five-spoke glossy black diamond-cut alloy wheels.

A staggered tyre arrangement is used, with 235/50 R19 tyres at the front and wider 255/45 R19 tyres at the rear.

The larger rear tyres contribute to traction and handling while reinforcing the EC40’s broad stance.

Active safety systems include ABS, Electronic Stability Control, traction management and Volvo’s Collision Avoidance technology.

The EC40 can detect vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals and provide warnings or automatic braking when required.

Cross Traffic Alert with Auto Brake and Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation further improve protection around the vehicle.

The EC40 features seven airbags, covering the front occupants together with side, curtain and driver’s knee protection.

Its high-strength passenger structure incorporates dedicated protection for the high-voltage battery.

ISOFIX child-seat mounting points, electronic rear child locks, seatbelt pretensioners and Volvo’s Whiplash Injury Protection System are also included.

The EC40 does not rely on a large selection of conventional drive modes.

Drivers can adjust steering feel and One-Pedal Drive regenerative braking through the vehicle settings.

The Twin Motor automatically manages output between its front and rear motors according to traction and performance requirements.

The 9-INCH portrait touchscreen uses an Android Automotive-based infotainment platform with Google built-in.

Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play are integrated directly into the vehicle without requiring a connected smartphone.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also supported, while Over-the-Air software updates allow the system to receive improvements remotely.

The latest Volvo Car UX provides a revised home screen and quicker access to commonly used vehicle functions.

Both Ultra variants feature Pilot Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control and Stop & Go functionality.

Additional systems include Lane Keeping Aid, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Information System with Steer Assist and Oncoming Lane Mitigation.

Cross Traffic Alert with Auto Brake, Driver Alert Control and Road Sign Information are also fitted.

A 360-degree Surround View camera and front and rear parking sensors provide further assistance during low-speed manoeuvres.

Both Ultra variants feature a 13-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Sound system.

The setup produces approximately 600 W and incorporates a dedicated subwoofer with Dirac audio optimisation.

Being fully electric, the EC40 uses electric motors instead of a combustion engine.

The Ultra Single Motor features a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 175 KW (235 HP) and 420 NM.

The Ultra Twin Motor combines a 110 KW front asynchronous motor and 190 KW rear permanent magnet motor, producing a total of 300 KW (402 HP) and 670 NM.

Both variants use a single-speed automatic electric reduction transmission.

Power is delivered directly without conventional multi-speed gear changes.

The Ultra Single Motor uses rear-wheel drive, giving the EC40 a more traditional rear-driven layout.

The Ultra Twin Motor features dual-motor all-wheel drive, with one motor powering each axle.

The Twin Motor system continuously manages torque distribution to balance traction, performance and efficiency.

The Ultra Single Motor accelerates from 0-100 KM/H in 7.3 seconds.

The substantially more powerful Ultra Twin Motor completes the same sprint in just 4.7 seconds.

Both variants have an electronically limited top speed of 180 KM/H.

As fully electric vehicles, both EC40 variants consume no petrol or diesel.

The Ultra Single Motor uses a 70 KWH NMC battery, with approximately 67 KWH usable capacity, providing up to 488 KM WLTP range. Official combined energy consumption is approximately 16.7 KWH/100 KM.

The Ultra Twin Motor receives a larger 82 KWH NMC battery, with around 79 KWH usable capacity, extending maximum range to 554 KM WLTP.

Both support 11 KW AC charging. A complete AC recharge takes approximately seven hours for the Single Motor and eight hours for the Twin Motor.

Maximum DC charging reaches 200 KW. The Single Motor completes 10-80% in approximately 26 minutes, while the Twin Motor requires around 28 minutes.

Standard Ultra equipment includes keyless entry and start, powered front seats, driver memory, automatic wipers, wireless smartphone charging and a hands-free powered tailgate.

A fixed panoramic glass roof is also standard.

The Volvo Cars App allows remote access to selected functions including cabin climate preparation, charging status and vehicle location.

The EC40 features dual-zone automatic climate control with dedicated rear air vents positioned at the back of the centre console.

An advanced air purifier with PM2.5 monitoring and remote cabin pre-cleaning further improves interior air quality.

The EC40 uses MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link independent rear arrangement.

Its suspension prioritises a balance between everyday comfort and stable body control.

The low-mounted battery helps lower the centre of gravity, while the Twin Motor’s AWD system provides greater traction during faster or lower-grip driving.

The absence of a combustion engine eliminates conventional engine vibration and significantly reduces powertrain noise.

Aerodynamic optimisation, body insulation and the smooth electric drivetrain provide a refined cabin during urban and highway driving.

The coupé body can generate some tyre and wind noise at higher speeds, but overall refinement remains appropriate for a premium electric crossover.

The Volvo EC40 remains a distinctive premium electric crossover, combining its coupé-like design with strong safety equipment and an increasingly competitive electric drivetrain.

At RM248,888, the Ultra Single Motor is the more rational choice, providing 235 HP, 420 NM, rear-wheel drive and 488 KM WLTP range, while retaining essentially the same Ultra equipment as the more expensive variant.

The RM288,888 Ultra Twin Motor adds a larger 82 KWH battery, increases range to an impressive 554 KM WLTP and delivers a substantial performance upgrade to 402 HP and 670 NM, reducing the 0-100 KM/H time to just 4.7 seconds.

Both provide 200 KW DC charging, Pixel LED headlamps, Pilot Assist, 360-degree cameras, Harman Kardon audio, powered front seats and a panoramic glass roof.

Its 9-inch central display and overall cabin architecture now look less futuristic beside Volvo’s newest EX30 and EX90 models, but the addition of the updated Volvo Car UX helps keep the EC40 technologically relevant.
