Volvo XC60

One of the Swedish’s highly sought-after staple models, the new Volvo XC60, upgraded and launched in Malaysia.

A C-segment (mid-size crossover SUV) runner, underpinned is Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and two powertrain (MHEV, PHEV) options.

Locally assembled (CKD – Shah Alam), available via Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) are two variants (XC60 B5 AWD Core – RM328,888, XC60 T8 AWD Ultra – RM362,888).

Prices (OTR, w/o insurance) include a complimentary (five years) Volvo Service Plan (VSP – vehicle warranty: five years, unlimited mileage – service package: five years/100,000 KM – roadside assistance: five years, 24 hours), a PHEV battery warranty (eight years/160,000 KM – XC60 T8 AWD) and a complimentary (five years) Digital Service Package (DSP – Google).

Four (single-tone) exterior colours (XC60 B5 AWD Core, XC60 T8 AWD Ultra: Forest Lake, Crystal White, Onyx Black, Denim Blue). Two (single-tone, dual-tone) interior colour (Charcoal, Charcoal-Cardamom).

The new XC60 gets a minimalistic, streamlined and tiered dashboard, linked to a flat-wide (retractable-lid cup holders, storage, wireless charger) centre console (gear shifter: leatherette – XC60 B5 AWD Core, Orrefors Crystal – XC60 T8 AWD Ultra).

Soft-/hard-touched (dash, centre console, steering wheel, doors), it sees two colour schemes (Charcoal, Charcoal-Cardamom) with contrast trims (XC60 B5 AWD Core: Metal Mash Aluminium décor, Chrome, XC60 T8 AWD Ultra: Natural Driftwood décor, Chrome).

Equipped are the driver/central displays (landscape-mounted: instrument cluster, portrait-mounted: infotainment), air-conditioning vents (square: corners – rectangular: centres) and an ambient light system (multi-colour).

Inclusively, the layout is ergonomic with accessibilities purposefully arranged (driver-centric, passenger-oriented). 

Installed is a 12.3-inch TFT LCD fully digital (Multi-Information Display – MID) driver display (instrument cluster – landscape-mounted) with a Windscreen-Head-Up Display (W-HUD – XC60 T8 AWD Ultra).

Features are vehicle telematics, Bluetooth, navigation, Intelligent Voice Assistant and customisable interface (drive mode dependent).

Comfortable, the interior sees leatherette (Nordico – eco-friendly) upholstery (quilted) in two colour schemes (Charcoal, Charcoal-Cardamom).

The front gets electronic-powered (driver/passenger: multi-way-adjust, lumbar, driver-cushion extension, memory, ventilation/heating) Comfort seats. 

The rear gets a manual-operated (individual backrest recline, integrated booster cushions, 40:20:40 split-flat-boot-floor-fold) Ergonomic bench (three-seater).

Included are armrests (front: centre console, rear: centre seat fold-out), headrests (front, rear: electronic-folding), panoramic glass sunroof (electronic: open/close/tilt/slide, dark tint, UV protect, sunshade), headliner (Blond), textile floor mats (Charcoal – waterproof, easy clean) and treadplates (Volvo lettering, Aluminium).

A five-seater (mid-size crossover SUV), the cabin offers generous space, providing comfortable seatings with ample interior mobility for the occupants (front, rear).

Mounted is a three-spoke-rounded sport steering wheel. Leatherette (Charcoal) with contrast trims (Chrome, Gloss Black, Satin Silk) colour scheme.

Features are multi-switches (Bluetooth, Media, Voice Recognition, Vehicle Telematics) and column adjustments (tilt, telescopic).

Drive is aided by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

Practical storage areas. E.g., pockets (side doors, seatbacks), centre console spaces (partitioned, caverned, retractable, under-stowage), card holder (driver-side dash), glove box (extensible hook-integrated) and a hidden boot space (under-boot floor).

Provided are four cup holders (two: front – two: rear) and four bottle holders (one: side doors).

Multiple power outlets. E.g., four USB ports (two: front – two: rear), two 12 V sockets (front, boot) and one wireless charger (front).

The boot comes with an electronic-powered (handsfree: remote/key fob, tailgate button, Volvo app digital key, dash button, kick sensor – height adjustment) tailgate.

Accessing it opens to 483 litres (rear seats up) and 965 litres (rear seats down) of load capacities. Included is a 28-litre hidden storage (under-boot floor).

Weighing in at 2,253 kg (XC60 B5 AWD Core) and 2,533 kg (XC60 T8 AWD Ultra), the new XC60 measure at 4,708 mm long, 2,117 mm wide, 1,655 mm (XC60 B5 AWD Core) and 1,651 mm (XC60 T8 AWD Ultra) tall and with a wheelbase spanning 2,865 mm.

Dynamically commanding, it exudes a solidly angular and wide exterior, emphasised by symmetrically aligned and straightly cut creases.

The front-end sees mildly formed bonnet, muscular quarter panels (raised fenders) and a sculpted bumper (grille: diagonally overlapping slats, Volvo emblem – vents: lower-centre, corners).

Accentuations, body trims (Black: grille, vents, window surrounds, side mirrors, B-pillars, roof rails – Black-Chrome: Volvo emblem).

Unique, the tail lamps (darkened) are housed vertical and wraparound S-shaped (D-pillars flowing). Installed are full LED units.

Features are automatic On/Off, sequential turn signals (LED) and welcome/leaving lights. Included is a high-mounted stop light (spoiler integrated).

The side mirrors (single-tone: Black) are electronic-powered (auto-fold, adjust, tilt) with sequential turn signals (LED), blind-spot indicators (Blind Spot Information System – BLIS), automatic-dimming and memory.

Installed is a setup of ventilated disc brakes (front, rear). 

Drive is aided by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold system and a regenerative braking system (XC60 T8 AWD Ultra).

Aerodynamically designed, mounted is a set of 19-inch (five-double-spoke – High-Gloss Black-Polished Aluminium-Diamond cut) alloy rims, rubbered-up in 235/55 R19 (front, rear) tyres.

The new XC60 gets a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). 

Grouped are City Safety suite (collision avoidance & mitigation with intersection support for pedestrian, cyclist, scooter steering avoidance and large animal detection with steering support and braking), Front and Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation Support, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Steer Assist, Lane Keeping Aid (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Run-Off Road Mitigation with Road Edge Detection, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, Rear Cross Traffic Alert With Low Speed Auto Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist, Pilot Assist, Park Assist Cameras (reverse-dynamic guidelines, 360-degree-3D view), Driver Alert System, Door Opening Alert (DOA) and Emergency Stop Assist (ESA).

Entertainment is channelled via variant-specific setups.

First setup (XC60 B5 AWD Core) is Volvo’s High Performance audio system (220 W – 10 speakers: A-pillar tweeters, mid-range, doors, air-ventilated subwoofer).

Second setup (XC60 T8 AWD Ultra) is a Bowers and Wilkins High Fidelity audio system (1,410 W – 15 speakers: A-pillar tweeters, centre-dash, roof, doors, air-ventilated subwoofer) with four ‘Room Modes’ (Studio, Individual, Concert Hall, Jazz Club).

Coupled with the setups is an eight-speed automatic transmission (Geartronic).

Power is sent to all four wheels, via an All-Wheel Drive (AWD – XC60 B5 AWD Core) system and an Electronic All-Wheel Drive (e-AWD – XC60 T8 AWD Ultra) system.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is done in 6.9 secs (XC60 B5 AWD Core) and 4.8 secs (XC60 T8 AWD Ultra). 

Top speed is electronically capped at 180 km/h (XC60 B5 AWD Core, XC60 T8 AWD Ultra).

Good sound insulation, covering all the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects. The cabin is serene, with the tyre, road and wind noises mostly hindered.
