- How Does The Toyota Harrier Compare To Its Predecessor And Competitors?
Back in April, the local market welcomed the fourth-generation Toyota Harrier. As a recap, Malaysia is one of the two countries where the vehicle is sold officially and comes in a single variant.
As a recap, the 2018 Toyota Harrier 2.0T Luxury is sold starting from RM259,900 and features LED Projectors with Auto High Beam along with LED daytime running lights and cornering lamps, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Interior-wise, the vehicle is fitted with a dual-zone climate control system with nanoe, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, panoramic sunroof, Nappa leather upholstery, and the 8-way power-adjustable driver seat.
To compare, the fourth-generation Toyota Harrier is slightly affordable with a price starting from RM249,706.50. New upgrades include the Bi-LED headlamps and Smart Adaptive High beam system and 18-inch alloy wheels with black coating and silver spokes. Interior-wise, the Harrier is fitted with all-new dual-zone automatic climate control, a High-Grade Optitron meter with Head-Up Display and Colour Multi-Information Display, 8-inch display audio with Bluetooth as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, panoramic moonroof, a 12-way power adjustable driver seat and leather upholstery.
As for the competitors, the Toyota Harrier stands alongside luxury SUVs such as Volvo XC40 Recharge, Lexus UX 200 Urban, and the CX8 2.5G SkyActiv. When comparing the price, the Harrier has the highest price followed by the Lexus UX 200 Urban at RM243,888, continued by the Volvo XC40 Recharge at RM241,997, and finally the CX8 2.5G SkyActiv which is priced at RM201.360.
Under the hood, the Harrier is fitted with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder DOHC engine with Dual VVT-i with Direct-Shift CVT which produces 171 hp at 6,600 rpm and 203 Nm at 4,400 rpm. As for the XC40 Recharge, it is powered by a 1.5-litre 12-valve DOHC with Direct Fuel Injection, Turbocharger, and Variable Valve Timing which results in 171 hp at 5,800 rpm and 265 Nm at 1,500 rpm.
Meanwhile, the UX 200 Urban gestures a 2.0-litre 16-valve DOHC naturally aspirated engine with Variable Valve Timing which churns out 169 hp at 6,600 rpm and 205 Nm at 4,800 rpm. Following that is the CX8 2.5G SkyActiv, which is fitted with a 2.5-litre 16-valve DOHC naturally aspirated engine with Variable Valve Timing that provides 192 hp at 6,000 rpm and 258 Nm at 4,000 rpm.
In terms of transmission, the Harrier is equipped with the Dual VVT-i with Direct-Shift CVT while the XC40 Recharge features a 7-speed Dual-clutch Automatic (Wet). On the other hand, a 10 speed Direct Shift is available on the Lexus UX 200 and the CX8 2.5G Skyactiv features a 6 ratio SkyActiv-Drive with Manual Shift mode.
The Toyota Harrier recorded the highest fuel consumption, at 8.3 l/100km, followed by the CX8 and 2.5G SkyActiv and UX 200 Urban at 7.9 l/100km with the XC40 Recharge having the lowest record at 2.2 l/100km. Note that the fuel consumption for both the UX 200 Urban and XC40 Recharge is based on the NEDC test.

Dimension-wise, the Harrier stands at 4,740 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,660 mm high with a wheelbase spanning 2,690 mm and boot space of 425-litres. On the other hand, the XC40 Recharge is measured at 4,425 long, 1,658 high, 1,873 wide with a wheelbase of 2702.56 mm and 452-litres of boot space.
Volvo XC40 Recharge
Moving on, the UX 200 Urban features a boot space of 227-litres alongside a dimension of 4,495 long, 1,840 wide, 1,520 high, and a wheelbase of 2,640 litres. Lastly, the CX8 2.5G SkyActiv measures 4,900 mm long, 1,840 mm wide, 1,730 mm high with a wheelbase spanning 2,930 mm, and a boot space of 209 litres.
Lexus UX 200 Urban
From the dimensions mentioned, it is seen that the CX8 2.5G SkyActiv is the longest (4,900 mm), compared to the Harrier. Besides that, the XC40 Recharge is the highest and widest vehicle, compared to the other three models. In terms of boot space, the XC40 continues to bag a first place, with 452-litres.
