Park Your Car Outside? VTAREC Shares 5 Simple Ways To Prevent Thieves From Stripping Your Parts Tonight
![]()
If you park your car in an open area outside your house, you might want to listen up. According to a report by The Star, The Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTAREC) has warned that catalytic converter theft is becoming more noticeable across the country.
Driven by the high value of precious metals inside the components and a demand for cheaper secondhand parts, thieves are moving fast in urban and semi-urban areas. The good news? VTAREC General Manager Mas Tina Abdul Hamid says that simply increasing the "difficulty" for a thief can be enough to make them walk away.
Here are 5 simple ways to protect your vehicle tonight:
1. Install a "Cat Shield"

Catalytic converter guard.
One of the most effective ways to deter theft is by installing a catalytic converter guard or shield. These physical barriers make it much harder and more time-consuming for a criminal to remove the part. You can easily find these guards on various e-commerce platforms tailored to your specific car model.
2. Pick Your Parking Wisely

Location is everything. Vehicles parked in poorly lit, open areas outside residential compounds are the most vulnerable. If you can, park in well-lit locations or areas covered by CCTV surveillance systems to keep your car visible to the public.
3. Upgrade Your Alarm System
Consider installing a vibration sensor or an upgraded alarm system. These sensors can alert you immediately if someone starts tampering with or lifting your vehicle to get underneath it.
4. Engrave Your Parts
VTAREC suggests marking or engraving your catalytic converter. Having an identifying mark makes the part much harder for a thief to resell to "chop shops" and helps authorities identify stolen property if it’s recovered.
5. Don't Forget Your Other Parts!
It’s not just about the converter. High-demand items like side mirrors, headlights, and even bumpers are frequently targeted because they are easy to remove and expensive to buy new. Using security screws or parking in a way that limits access to these parts can save you from a massive repair bill.
