Toyota’s Beastly Duo At The 2021 SEMA, The Supra Sport Top And Heritage Edition
Showcasing the work that went into building a beauty that symbolises one of the 90s’ iconic Japanese sports cars, Toyota debuted the Supra Sport Top and Heritage Edition at the 2021 SEMA.
First of all, it turns out that one can’t just simply chop the new Toyota Supra’s roof off to create an MkIV-inspired Targa.
Autoshop owner in Texas responsible for the Supra modifications, KC Mathieu, commented, “The steel was a little harder to cut through than we expected. We started with an air saw and got nowhere real fast.”
Right off the bat, after 30 minutes of rigorous fabrication to the new Supra’s roof, the team only managed to cut through one inch of steel.
Hence, they were forced to go back to the drawing board, and after acquiring a new better tool, just like that, the roof started to give way.
Once the roof was taken off, Toyota then 3D-printed a pair of composite panels, contoured to the Supra’s silhouette.
This was all done while retaining the outer roof body structure shapes, which were reinforced to make them stronger.
Additionally, on the Heritage Edition trim, it gets the hand-built rear diffuser and underbody airflow tweaked, fitted with a new exhaust and the MkIV’s ‘basket handle’ rear wing.
Then, both models’ turbo was modified to produce 18 percent better airflow to the BMW-sourced straight-six, along with a new ECU, bespoke intake and exhaust.
As such, the power they generate rises significantly, from a mere 340 bhp to a really startling and beastly 500 bhp.
Last but not least, they were also equipped with bigger brakes and adjustable coil-overs to further complement the performance upgrades.
In short, apart from the many other inspiring vehicles showcased at the biggest aftermarket auto show in the world, these two Supra beasts were among the crowd-pleasers for sure.
