- Perodua Lowest Sales Performance In 7 Years
Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) registered 190,291 total units of vehicles for 2021, dropped by 13.6 percent compared to 220,154 units sold in 2020.
After seven years, the company sold less than 200,000 cars for the first time. The last time Perodua registered less than 200k units was in 2014, with 195,579 units sold, and the company recorded its highest sales in 2019 with 240,341 units.
Despite the pandemic and intermittent supply disruption, Perodua increased its sales by 13 percent to 22,940 units from 20,299 vehicles in December 2021.
Myvi continues to lead the overall Malaysian market by a model with 47,525 units, followed by the Axia and Bezza dominating the country’s A-segment market.
The recent flash flood has gotten 1,675 people to respond to the Perodua Flood Assistance Programme, where most vehicles are being inspected at Perodua service centres across the country.
“Our priority now is to work with the insurance companies as well as our other partners to hasten any approval process needed to repair and restore the flood-damaged vehicles,” said its president and chief executive officer Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
Although the local automotive supply chain has taken an enormous setback in recent years, there is a silver lining as Perodua's order bank remains healthy as consumers are still responding positively to the sales tax exemption introduced by the government.
