- 2023 Toyota Crown; Catch The World Premiere On July 15
The 15-generation Toyota Crown will soon add a new generation to its pedigree, as Toyota has announced that an entirely new model will debut this Friday, July 15.
We can see the new model's "face" in the video thumbnail used for the upcoming livestream of the new model premiere (link below), but there have already been hints that the upcoming Crown won't have the same classic three-box sedan shape as it did in the past, not the least of which are these patent filing images that depict a fastback crossover.
According to information that previously leaked, the 2023 Crown would be based on the automaker's TNGA-K platform, which is already the foundation for existing models like the RAV4, Harrier and the Lexus RX.
The next fastback crossover vehicle will be 20 mm longer, 40 mm wider, and 80 mm taller than the previous Crown sedan, measuring 4,930 mm long, 1,840 mm wide, and 1,540 mm height. The wheelbase is anticipated to be 70 mm shorter than the outgoing Crown sedan's at 2,850 mm.
The next Crown is expected to come with a choice of two internal combustion engines: a 2.4 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol hybrid paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and a 2.5 litre inline-four petrol mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The next Crown lineup is said to have plug-in hybrid powertrains that utilise the 2.5 litre engine in 2WD and AWD variants. Existing Toyota group models with this combination have a total system output of 309 PS, which is made up of a petrol engine producing 185 PS and 227 Nm and two electric motors producing 182 PS and 54 PS at the front and rear, respectively.
There have been further hints about the new Crown, including the fact that the next crossover would be offered in four trim levels, including a driver-focused RS version. With the premiere of the 16th generation Crown, the first to use this bodystyle, just a few days away, we will know for sure in due time!
