BYD Enters the Japanese Electric Passenger Car Market - Reveals Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal.

BYD Auto announced its official entry into the Japanese passenger car market this week, beginning with three models in 2023.

The Chinese juggernaut will first offer the Atto 3 model, which is also known as the Yuan Plus in China. The BYD Atto 3 is set to go on sale in starting in January 2023.

The second model will be the BYD Dolphin, which will be released in mid-2023, and the third will be the all-new BYD Seal, which will is poised for release in the second half of 2023.

All three electric vehicles underpins on BYD's e-platform 3.0, and all are equipped with BYD's Blade Batteries, which utilises LFP chemistry and cell-to-pack system technologies.

BYD is not entirely  new in Japan as the business has been selling a variety of products since 1999, including rechargeable batteries, solar energy products, pure electric buses, electric forklifts, and more. Passenger electric vehicles are simply the latest chapter in the brand's continuous growth within the Japanese market.

Given how limited the domestic BEV supply in Japan is now, BYD has a good chance of gaining a foothold. Elsewhere, the carmaker is currently active in 70 countries  across six continents, though its plug-in electric car sales are mostly concentrated in China with 133,762 units sold in June as opposed to 2,177 vehicles it exported within the same time.

According to BYD these three EVs deliver more options and significantly boost the local electric passenger vehicle industry.

"As one of the first to develop electric vehicles in the world, BYD has accumulated 27 years of expertise and experience in the field of new energy vehicles, and has mastered the advanced technologies spanning batteries, electric motors, electronic control systems and automotive-grade chips’’ stated Chairman and President of BYD Wang Chuanfu.

''It will be fascinating to see how Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and other Japanese manufacturers respond, since they have had to compete with an increasing number of foreign BEVs on their home turf in recent years'' Wang added.
