- Proton X50 triumphs as Malaysia’s best-selling car in July
National carmaker Proton revealed today that the Proton X50 compact SUV stood as its country’s best-selling car last month. A total of 4,762 new units were registered, according to Proton. This sees the frim setting a new highwater mark for SUV sales in the country whilst also continuing to retain its high position in segment.
"The company is immensely proud of the model becoming the first SUV to be crowned as the best-selling vehicle in Malaysia and we are thankful for the support from our customers,” said Roslan Abdullah, Proton’s Deputy CEO.
Not to be outdone, the X50’s bigger brother, the recently re-specced X70, also saw encouraging July 2022 sales figures with 1,704 new units registered. It still leads the C-segment SUV sales whilst contributing to increasing Proton’s overall SUV volume for 2022 at the 31,500 units mark within the seven months of the year.
SUVs aside, Proton’s staple entry-level sedan offering, the Saga, also marked strong sales performance during this same period. Proton says 4,521 new units of said A-segment sedan were registered in July, pushing said model’s culminative sales for the year up to 28,005 units in total, with 9,811 units of which consisting of the newly updated 2022 Saga model the firm launched back in May this year.
As for the Proton Persona sedan and its Iriz hatch twin, Proton says approval delays saw new registration for both models halted in July. The Exora MPV, on the other hand, recorded 476 new units registered during the month of July.
Over to its export efforts, Proton shipped 380 units in July alone, bringing its total exports for 2022 up to 3,102 units thus far. This sees the firm surpass the 3,018 units it exported from the whole of 2021. Leading the brand’s export charge here are both the X50 and X70 SUVs, as well as the Saga sedan.
Following its best sales month of the year in June, Proton recorded a total of 11,477 units (domestic and export) in July 2022. Sales for the year now stand at 71,601 units, marking an increase of 19.7% over the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Proton Commerce Sdn Bhd announced it will honour all Letters of Understanding (LOU) at the stated interest rate, even if they were issued prior to recent interest rate hikes. Terms and conditions apply, and funds must be disbursed by 31 Dec 2022.
This means customers who already have an LOU from Proton Commerce and are awaiting their orders need not worry about being charged at a higher financing rate.
“Domestically, we are working to ensure that despite recent interest rate hikes, our customers will still be able to afford the vehicles they ordered. It’s vital to ensure we convert as many bookings as possible into transacted sales as this will help drive registrations as we continue to strive for more future success,” added Roslan Abdullah regarding the matter.
