- The Firefly Sport EV is the coolest ‘toy’ you’ll see today
What you see is in fact marketed as a ‘toy’ for kids, and that’s despite its promise of “handling like a real car”. Say hello to the Firefly Sport EV, which is a children’s plaything that’s perhaps a little more than what it appears.
The brainchild of UK-based Young Driver Motor Cars, the Firefly Sport EV was designed by Puremedium. It sports plenty of traits and styling cues commonly seen in modern sportscars and supercars – LED lighting included.
At 2.1 metres long, it is a small vehicle, but it’s big enough to accommodate two children between the ages of 4 and 10 years old in its 2-seat cabin. The Firefly Sport EV’s goal, according to its makers, is to introduce and teach kids about both road safety and EVs.
Similar to full-sized vehicles, the Firefly Sport is constructed upon an aluminium chassis that features independent suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. Amongst the people involved with the developing it included former Aston Martin production engineer Steve Rawson, and former JLR and MG powertrain engineer Dr. Ian Pogson.
Notably, the Firefly Sport EV stands as the UK’s first 100% homegrown EV as it saw plenty of notable UK industry personnel behind its development and production. It also uses batteries sourced from Bromsgrove, electric motor mad in Bournemouth, its chassis built in Convetry, and its body crafted in Huddersfield.
As for powertrain layout, the Firefly Sport EV employs two 24-Volt electric motors, a gearbox, and dual rechargeable and recyclable 12-Volt batteries. Depending on the configuration, the top speed ranges from as low as 11 kmh up to 40 kmh. thus making it suitable for different age groups.
If that sounds a little too peppy for you, worry not as the Firefly Sport does come with a remote power cut off feature that works up to a range of 200 metres. Additionally, is also comes equipped with a sensor that allows it to automatically cut off power when it detects obstacles ahead.
Presently, the Firefly Sport EV will be deployed in Young Driver’s training sites around the UK where kids can enjoy a 15-minute test drive for a fee of £20 (approx. RM107.55). Soon, it will be available for purchase for families planning on using it on private land, though prices will only be announced during its official debut at the British Motor Show on Aug 18, with production commencing this month too.
Furthermore, Young Driver Motor Cars also confirmed plans to build an adult-friendly version of the Firefly Sport EV too. More details surrounding this will be announced in the near future, according to the firm.
Parents, wouldn’t this be a treat for the kids this Christmas?
