The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N could offer up to 600 hp and Drift Mode

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N in camo being tested at Nurburgring 

Hyundai has come a long way from its unappealing offerings in the early 90s to cars that ooze appeal from all angles nowadays. One such offering is the current Ioniq 5 electric vehicle and now it’s getting the Hyundai's N treatment. 

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N will be the first ground-up development electric vehicle that is set to enter showrooms next year. Spy images of these cars undergoing testing in Korea and Nürburgring, Germany have been popping up on the internet.  


As mentioned, the Ioniq 5 N would be the first high-performance electric offering from Hyundai and loosely based on the 'E-GMP' electric-vehicle platform.

Albert Biermann, the former N-Division main man during a recent press conference in Germany informed DRIVE that the Ioniq 5 N would be fast enough to change perceptions. He further added it will for sure be much faster than the current Hyundai i30N, how can it be slower packing almost 600 HP. 

He however, did not go into the details to clarify the two electric motors output combined but just mentioned a rough estimate of between 580 to 620 HP. Albert Biermann adds that although the talk of horsepower excites everyone, the key focus would be on delivering to the driver the sound and feel which would result in the level of fun it delivers.  


When asked further if the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N would be able to mimic the ICE N vehicles "pops and bangs", Biermann stated that those would be the biggest challenge as speed is already there, Hyundai would however add in some sorts of sound to deliver an audible excitement instead. More importantly, he confirmed that the Ioniq N would come with “drift mode” which at the press of a button will send most of its power to the rear wheels, enabling rear-wheel skids. However, this function can only be enabled in closed conditions such as race tracks.

Well for now we can just wait and see the reviews once the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is launched next year. We are unable to confirm if it will be made available in Malaysia, but for sure there will be a niche market excited to get their hands on one.
