Making driving safer for everyone, a new vehicle plate, ‘R’, which stands for ‘Return’, has been introduced in Australia.
Its function is to help drivers who experience trauma after being involved in a road accident or those who have not driven for a long time.
Like all ‘P’ and ‘L’ licences, the ‘R’ symbol is now a new sticker that can be affixed to the vehicles in the country.
In addition, the ‘R’ plate also features a QR code, which when scanned will lead to professional support services.

However, the proposed use of ‘R’ plates is not officially endorsed by any transport authorities in Australia, but the use of it is not considered as an illegal act.
This new plate was launched by the Australian-based car service company, mycar, formerly known as Kmart Tyre & Auto.
The company stated, "We are concerned about those who suffer physical injuries due to road incidents, but not many people think about how the trauma of a road accident can affect a person's mental state. Hence, the ‘R’ plate is a sign to other road users that the driver may need extra care, giving them time and space to calm down or recover from trauma. Plus, drivers who have just returned to driving can drive with more confidence in an atmosphere full of support.”
That said, should Malaysia also use the same approach to help other drivers who need support after being involved in an accident? Share your thoughts below.
