This Ferrari Testarossa Spider comes straight out of retro video game OutRun!
Heads up retro Ferrari fans, UK auction house RM Sotheby’s has got a unique treat in store for its upcoming November auction in the form of this unique and rare Ferrari Testarossa Spider featured. Yes, this is the very same car that’s prominently featured in classic video game OutRun.
First up, a quick history lesson. Officially, Ferrari only built one open-top Spider version of its iconic 80s sportscar the Testarossa specifically for the late Gianni Agnelli himself. Apart from that, designers and coachbuilders Pininfarina had reportedly built and customised no less than seven Testarossa Spiders for the Sultan of Brunei, plus a few more for a handful of its clients.
According to RM Sotheby’s, the car pictured here was commissioned by an unnamed yet “prominent client” of Pininfarina in 1989 and later delivered in 1990. Similar to the cars Pininfarina built for the Brunei royal family, this particular Testarossa Spider had been converted to become both an open-top and right-hand-drive (RHD).
However, unlike the car featured in the OutRun video game, this Testarossa Spider was never registered for the road and was hardly driven – it clocked just 413 KM on its odometer since delivery. Prior to being listed for the upcoming November auction, this Testarossa Spider underwent a major restoration effort after spending much of its life as a static display that costed over €177,000 (approx. RM831,461).
Rare and unique styling aside, this Testarossa Spider by Pininfarina should offer decent speed and wind-in-hair thrills now that it’s back to running order. Much of that magic stems from the naturally-aspirated 4.9-litre flat-12 mounted just behind the cabin that delivers 385 HP and 480 NM (1989 EU-spec). This, in turn, should promise 0-100 KM/H in a respectable 5.8 seconds.
Keen to place your bid to own perhaps one of the coolest pieces of retro 80s motoring? Well, get ready because it’s no bargain. RM Sotheby’s estimates reads between £1.4 million and £1.8 million (approx. RM7.62 million and RM9.79 million). What do you folks think of this throwback masterpiece, then?
