BMW 7 Series navigation map for the BMW Highway Assistant using HERE HD Live Map

BMW 7 Series recognised as the first vehicle among its series to employ HERE HD Live Map for hands-free driving. According to Senior Vice President Driving Experience at BMW Group Dr. Nicolai Martin, he mentioned that a digital HD map is essential for highly automated driving which provides road geometry, route profile and traffic signs all on a global scale.

“We have been working with HERE for many years to bring highly automated driving to market, and we are now thrilled to see the result of our collaboration finally come to life.

Together, we are going one step further in delivering on our promise to provide a superior driving experience to our customers” he added.

Meanwhile Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer at HERE Technologies highlighted the collaboration with BMW demonstrates the value of maps for highly automated driving and looking forward towards the expansion of Level 2+ to all types of roads.

5 years ago, which brings us back to 2018, the BMW Group pioneered hands-free driving at a top speed of 130 km/h. Now, the company debuted its all-new BMW 7 Series as their first production car to be released with SAE Level 2+ autonomous functions including the top speed mentioned earlier.

More on the function, it provides hands-free driving on interstates and highways, as long as drivers remain engaged and ready to take control especially when combined with the HERE HD Live Map.

Then, the HERE platform allows the vehicle's navigation system to display in real time where the SAE Level 2+ feature can be securely used. As automated driving capabilities expand across vehicles, roadways, and regions, the HERE HD Live Map will be integrated into additional BMW models over time.

Adding on to that, the advanced navigation system is not only highly accurate but also consists of up-to-date layers of data which ‘informs’ the vehicle of its condition and road characteristics. The lane-level data however, serves as a redundant source of information to the on-board sensors, providing the system with extra quality assurances. Plus, HERE HD Live Map enables a vehicle to anticipate and adapt to changing road conditions.

On a different note, the new BMW 7 Series also utilises Predictive Routing and HERE Real-Time Traffic. HERE Predictive Routing basically acts as a cloud-based routing tool that learns individual driving behaviours to recommend more personalised itineraries, which can be found in BMW iX.

Lastly, HERE Real-Time Traffic feature delivers exact information about traffic congestion and potential road hazards ahead, as well as auto re-routing capabilities, allowing drivers to stay safe while saving time. So far, the all-new BMW 7 Series which is equipped with HERE Real Time Traffic expanded across 70 countries.
