The unprecedented demand for crossover SUVs globally has led to the rise of a whole new car ‘genre’, namely performance SUVs. As the looming electrification revolution gives crazy numbers for carmakers to brag about, the race for the fastest ‘super SUVs’ has officially kicked-off.

Borne out of this race too are numerous EV start-ups, some with industry veterans at the helm, while others are just as clueless as we are. One of those newer EV makers is Drako, founded in the heart of Silicon Valley. Going against the likes of the Lotus Eletre, Drako has officially unveiled the Drako Dragon ‘SuperSUV’.

The Dragon boasts a whopping 2,000 HP in total power output, dwarfing the Eletre’s mere 905 HP claim. Said power output stems from a quad-motor configuration, juiced by an in-house designed battery pack with 500 kW fast charging, offering a claimed travel range up to 676 KM too. All in all, the Dragon is capable of despatching the 0-100 KM/H sprint in less than 2 seconds, and achieving a V-max in excess of 322 KM/H (200 MPH) – a no-brainer feat indeed, given the claimed power output.

Designed in Italy by Lowie Vermeersch and GranStudio, the Dragon boasts an aggressive stance, coupled with sleek roofline and somewhat tall ride height. The B-pillars are removed to give space for its massive two doors that open upwards gull-wing style, or in this case, ‘dragon’-wing, giving it a dragon-flapping-its-wings facade from the front. Additional aero bits such as the air ducts on its C-pillar give the Dragon a performance pedigree, apart from its literal performance benefits.

The Dragon’s ride height is adjustable thanks to its adaptive dampers that can double its standard ground clearance, should you desire to hit the gravel on this hyper-SUV. The addition of roof rails also serves as a reminder of the Dragon’s SUV-ness, as well as its the massive 23-inch wheels it rides on. Hiding beneath said gigantic wheels are carbon-ceramic brakes that deliver ample stopping power for this hyper SUV.

Those brakes aren’t the only carbon-made items found on the Dragon, as it underpins a carbon fibre monocoque chassis. The body panels are made of natural fibre composites, reducing about 70% of plastics used to build this SUV. Overall, this leads to the Dragon to weigh about 2.2 tonnes, quite a remarkable figure for a five-seater EV SUV.

Inside the Dragon’s cabin lies all-leather seats that can sit five, with a pair of massive screens bolted on the back of the two front seats. The front dashboard is crowned with a gigantic 17.1-inch central infotainment display. All of the driver controls are situated on its race-y steering wheel.

The US-built Drako Dragon is poised to begin deliveries in 2026. The American marque currently targets 5,000 units to be produced annually, with its price beginning at $290,000 (RM1,327,475). Customers can park their order now via Drako Motors’ official website for $500 (RM2,288) fully-refundable reservation cost for the standard Dragon. The first 99 customers will get an opportunity to book the special First Edition Dragon, for a whopping booking fee of $5,000 (RM22,887).
