Schumacher’s 2003 Ferrari F1 car sets record-breaking sale price

Just like its driver, the Ferrari Formula 1 racecar pictured here has set – and broken – a record. Auction house RM Sotheby’s recently announced that it sold Michael Schumacher’s old Ferrari F2003-GA for a record-breaking figure of US$14.8 million + (RM68.38 million+, thus making it the most valuable ‘modern-era’ F1 car ever sold.

At US$14,873,327 (RM68,714,771), this F2003-GA’s sale price broke the previous record which, coincidentally, was held by another ex-Michael Schumacher Ferrari Formula 1 racecar, which was an F2001 that sold in 2017 for just US$7,504,000 (RM34,668,480) – or nearly double.

Back to the F2003 in question, fans of the sport will remember this was the car that secured Schumacher’s sixth world title out of the seven in total he achieved. The F2003-GA pictured supplied five race wins plus two podium finishes, as well as three pole positions, in the 2003 season it competed in.

According to RM Sotheby’s, the F2003 was presented for sale “in full running order”, and was treated to a recent overhaul by Ferrari itself by its elite F1 Clienti arm. It was also driven by Michael’s son and current Formula 1 driver, Mick Schumacher, briefly at Ferrari’s Fiorano private test track as well prior to its sale.

Bearing chassis no. 229, it was designed by Rory Byrne and Ross Brawn as an evolution of its F2002 predecessor that dominated the previous season. The GA initials in its name honour Fiat boss, the late Gianni Agnelli, who passed away that year.

As for the powerplant, the F2003-GA is propelled by a 3.0-liter V10 naturally aspirated that was rebuilt earlier this year by Ferrari’s Formula 1 Clienti program. Capable of revving all the way up to an ear-shattering 19,000 RPM, the mill also serves up as much as 917 HP.

“Formula One cars of this quality and provenance rarely come to market,” explained the company’s EMEA director of sales Augustin Sabatié-Garat, regarding the F2003-GA’s sale.
