Anthony Loke: No To Flight Ticket Ceiling Price And KLIA2 "Spot-Check"

Yesterday, Minister Of Transport, YB Loke Siew Fook announced that there are no plans on the federal side to fix the prices of air tickets as this would affect any mode of transport's dynamic pricing mechanism. Having a ceiling price would only result in the number of flights or capacity to be reduced by the flighty operators in order not to incur losses as reported by The Malay Mail.

At the end of the day it is understood that every party's interest needs to be taken care of and as the Chinese borders are reopening on 8 January 2023, the dynamic pricing structure would align itself to the best interest of the airlines and customers.

Loke said this during the launch of AirAsia’s low fare campaign for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration. He also mentioned that he is upbeat the aviation industry will return to pre-Covid performance.

The government highly welcomes any airlines that are able to reduce or fix their ticket prices and is willing to help them in any ways possible to achieve this. However Loke does understand this is not so feasible for some smaller airlines as they are unable to scale due to the small fleet of flights available.

On another note, Loke also paid a ‘spot-check’ visit to KLIA2 to better understand and check the issues faced at the facility. During the visit, some key weaknesses were identified mainly being:

  • Improvement required at the e-hailing waiting room

  • Uneven road lanes caused by soil deposit that could pose as a danger to users

  • Facility lighting system requires upgrading to be brighter

It was pointed out that the facility management has appointed a contractor and all rectification and upgrade works will be carried out at the end January.

Adding to this, Loke advised all passengers having any dissatisfaction to forward all complaints to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) as they are the proper authority on such matters and not his ministry.
