- Audi Activesphere Concept Teased Ahead of its January Debut
Concept cars garner automakers a perfect opportunity to flex both its design and technological muscles, while serving a purpose of showcasing new styling and technological direction for new models in years’ time. With automobile electrification kicking in at full speed, many automakers, such as Audi, have started to unravel their next-gen EV concept that will set a path for the rest of its upcoming models to follow.
Since 2021, Audi has unveiled a next-gen concept car line-up, dubbed as the Sphere concept. What originally started as a trio of concept cars consisting of the Skysphere sports roadster, the Urbansphere people-mover and the Grandsphere executive sedan, Audi has finally unveiled the fourth and final Sphere concept, the Activesphere.
Poised to make its global debut later in Jan, the Activesphere is a SUV crossover concept with slanting coupe-like roofline and rather beefy-looking set of wheels. Akin to the rest of the Sphere concept, the Activesphere is also an EV crammed with Audi’s proprietary autonomous driving technology and many other tech amenities
This latest teaser of the Activesphere features a rather dark image showing the top-view of the SUV crossover. Though nothing much can be derived from said image in face value, a slight brightness tweak can unveil some hints of this concept SUV, from its flared fenders, rear roof rack to sporty coupe roofline. Plus, such a tweak also unveils its futuristic-looking glass roof with a pair of roof rack mounted on its steeply raked rear windscreen.
Although the glass roof offers a slight see-through of the Activesphere’s interior, nothing much can be further said about it, except for the red-hued seats.
Prior to this top-down teaser photo, Audi has previously unveiled a front-quarter view of the Activesphere back in 2021 that showcases more of its bodywork, albeit being cloaked in shadow. In spite of boasting a rather sleek and sporty body shape a la modern sports coupe, this active-lifestyle concept comes with an off-roading pedigree, thanks to its aggressive-looking all-terrain tyres and lifted dampers.
Whilst Audi already disclosed the performance and battery spec for some of its concepts, nothing was revealed pertaining to the Activesphere’s spec, for now. For comparison, the Skysphere sports coupe is said to boast a battery capacity north of 80-kWh that offers a travel range of around 500 KM.
Meanwhile, Audi’s biggest next-gen concept, the Urbansphere, is poised to fit a massive 120-kWh battery pack that can charge at speeds up to 270 kW, while offering up to 750 KM of travel range. This urban-dwelling concept is primed with an electric powertrain setup that outputs 395 HP and 688 NM.
On the other hand, the Grandsphere executive saloon concept boasts a whopping 711 HP and 960 NM – the highest power output unveiled so far amongst its Sphere concept siblings.
The Audi Activesphere concept will make its world premiere on Jan 26, 2023, in conjunction with Audi's “Celebration of Progress” showcase. Fingers crossed that we’ll be seeing more teasers ahead of its big reveal.
