- Ford Plans To Sell Its German Manufacturing Plant To BYD
Ford Motors is in talks with Chinese EV manufacturer BYD about its German plant. Ford plans to sell its German manufacturing plant to BYD as the carmaker continues to expand in Europe. Ford has begun to phase out production of some of its most popular models. The Ford Focus was once a popular model, but Ford is now focusing on electric vehicles.
According to reports, BYD may soon take over Ford's manufacturing facility in Saarlouis, Germany. According to The Wall Street Journal, the plant will be sold to China's largest EV manufacturer, BYD. BYD will enter the UK and France markets in 2023. BYD has previously stated that it intends to build at least one EV manufacturing plant in Europe. BYD's expansion plans will include the acquisition of the Ford manufacturing facility in Germany.
BYD's plans to become a global EV brand remain on track. According to the WSJ, Ford and BYD officials plan to meet in China to discuss the possible sale of the German plant. The talks are also in their early stages, with BYD being one of 15 potential investors shortlisted.
The sale of the plant is yet another aspect of Ford's operations reduction as it moves toward full EV production. Ford cut 8,000 jobs in a major downsizing move last summer. As the company pursues its EV manufacturing goals, more jobs will be lost. BYD's growth trajectory, on the other hand, is on the rise. The new plant will help to maintain the current trajectory.
