Singapore's Largest Taxi Company Invests In Israeli Self-Driving Startup

ComfortDelGro, Singapore's largest taxi operator, is investing $4 million in Ottopia, an Israeli self-driving software startup, as part of its push toward autonomous transportation. The investment, announced last week, is made possible by ComfortDelGro's US$100 million venture capital fund dedicated to the field. Ottopia provides a system that allows people to remotely monitor self-driving vehicles. The move is consistent with ComfortDelGro's strategy of acquiring autonomous-driving technologies through investment or collaboration rather than developing them in-house. It has also partnered with the Israeli automotive chip company Mobileye to launch self-driving taxis in Singapore.

ComfortDelGro has advanced self-driving technology by operating an autonomous shuttle bus on the campus of the National University of Singapore for over a year. The company hopes to expand the technology into other markets. It operates 34,000 taxis, buses, and rental vehicles in seven countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and China.
