Volkswagen Group confirmed that an almost production ready ID.7 will be displayed at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2023 in Las Vegas which is happening this week from Jan 5 to Jan 8. This sedan, which is the sixth model under the Volkswagen (VW) ID EV line-up built on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform.

The ID.7 was first envisioned as the ID. AERO concept with its initial public presentation in China. The follow up from which sees VW introducing it to the American market first at CES 2023, which also marks the brand’s return to the ever since it last appeared here six years back.

For CES, the ID.7 would be displayed with a unique smart camouflage paintwork that lights up the ID.7 interactively. A total of 40 layers of paint have been applied, of which some are conductive while others have insulating properties to achieve said interactive illumination.

“With the new ID.7, we are extending our electric model range into the upper segments. The sedan will offer top-class technology and quality. The ID.7 is one of ten new electric models that we are planning to launch by 2026,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Group. He further adds that the end goal for the firm is to deliver suitable products to customers in every single segment.

The ID.7 would be a long wheelbase model measuring 2,970 MM with short overhangs that enables it to expand its interior space further. According to VW, the list of innovations which is standard in the ID.7 will include a completely new concept display, an augmented reality heads-up display, a 380 MM screen, all-new climate control interface that’s integrated into the infotainment system, as well as illuminated touch sliders.

Another first for the models would be the new intelligent air conditioning vents which offers a number of intuitive functions for including the ability to detect and either cool down or warm up the interior when it senses the driver approaching it via the key fob. These “Smart Air Vents” are also able to channel air-flow dynamically to distribute the air over large areas as quickly as possible.

Furthermore, if it senses any passengers on-board, the vents would direct air straight to the passengers body or ventilate the interior indirectly. All these functions are always visible on the new large display and are individually customisable including activation via voice command.

No details surrounding battery size, power output or charging rate were released, but VW is claiming the ID.7 is able to cover up to 700 KM based on WLTP standards.

According to Volkswagen, the ID.7 design language features an aerodynamic front section and roof which help to drag giving it a better range. Furthermore, air intakes located upfront aids to guide air down the sides of the vehicle to the rear forming an air curtain for better airflow. This is coupled with a steeply sloped roof line, thus contributing to an efficient drag coefficient too.

The ID.7 would be Volkswagen’s second global model following the ID.4, and its primary target markets will be China, Europe and North America. For the European market, said model will roll out of  Volkswagen’s Emden plant. To date, Volkswagen has delivered 500,000 ID vehicles worldwide since the ID.3 first launched in September 2020.
