Mercedes-Benz has previewed the interior of its upcoming new sixth-gen E-Class (W214), and its set to feature a new MBUX Superscreen infotainment unit. This new tech stems from a concerted effort by the three-point star to provide a significantly more contemporary cabin and digital-based user experience over the W213 model it succeeds.

Comparison of the upcoming W214 E-Class's new MBUX Superscreen (left) with the MBUX Hyperscreen in the EQS (right).

The new W214 E-Class will follow its electrified EQE sibling in offering the option between a separate instrument and portrait-style infotainment displays, or a dashboard that’s almost covered entirely in pixels. Said new Superscreen tech is modelled heavily on the MBUX Hyperscreen present that’s as a high-cost option in models like the EQS and EQE.

Mercedes hasn’t divulge technical details to this latest MBUX tech, but does claim faster and more seamless operation over past versions of the in-house developed operating system.

It also gets new artificial-intelligence (AI) software that adapt with personal habits of the driver by monitoring routines. This enables the MBUX to automatically set climate control and seat-heating settings, as well as roll-down windows when approaching toll or parking booths.

The new MBUX Superscreen interface combines both a free-standing digital instrument display with central infotainment display plus optional passenger displays. The latter two are placed underneath a single piece of glass, for a cleaner and uncluttered look that’s also bolstered by the reduction of analogue control interfaces.

Besides deleting the centre console-mounted infotainment control pad, new digital air-conditioning controls within the central infotainment display will also be provided.

Additionally, the MBUX Superscreen also gets a new and long ventilation band that runs across the dashboard’s top half to replace the current W213’s layout of central and side vents. Also new here is an optional head-up display (HUD) with a larger field of view and augmented reality function – a la the S-Class.

Elsewhere, the sixth-gen E-Class also gets a more advanced ambient-lighting system that’s programmable to pulse in combination with music playback from the onboard audio system. It will also serve as a warning for other functions like the parking assistant suite, intersection approach system, as well as braking assistance.

This new MBUX system adopts much of the tech developed first shown in the EQE SUV including the ability to install third-party apps. In fact, When the new W214 generation E-Class hits the market later this year, various pre-installed apps will be included such as Angry Birds, TikTok, Vivaldi, Webex, Zoom and Zynk on-demand video streaming for both the central and optional passenger displays.

To mitigate the risk of distracted driving, Mercedes-Benz will prime a Dual Light Control (DLC). This uses sensors that disables the display when driver distraction is detected, but passengers can still watch movies and other content on the passenger display whilst the car is in motion.

Also developed for this suite is an optional camera mounted in the dashboard’s top area. This, according to Mercedes, allows drivers to take selfies or participate in video conferences, but only when the car is stationary.

Essentially, what Mercedes is priming the dash of the upcoming W214 E-Class with features that sees it stand on par with powerful laptops, tablets, and flagship smartphones to sate the demands of a modern connected lifestyle.
