KPKT Proposed New Guidelines On EV Charger Parking

PLAN Malaysia, a Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT) agency, is currently developing guidelines for electric vehicle charger parking in Malaysia. A draft of the guidelines is currently available for public comment on the Malaysia Productivity Corporation's (MPC) Unified Public Consultation (UPC) website.

The public can read through the guidelines that state a couple of interesting facts that could completely alter Malaysia's EV charging landscape in the near future. The document contains two major points which are the prohibition on EV charging parking lots in basement parking and the prohibition on the same in individual parking lots in strata unit parking.

According to the proposed guidelines, EV charger parking can only be built at ground level for public charging. Basement chargers will not be permitted, raising concerns about what will happen to chargers such as Gentari's Suria KLCC chargers.

The only non-ground level charging in malls that appears to be permitted are open air rooftop levels.

Both appear to be motivated by the fire and rescue department's (JBPM) requirement for access of firefighting vehicles to the EV charger parking due to concerns about electric car fires occurring while charging. Today (21 March) is the deadline for providing feedback on this proposal. To view the proposed guidelines and provide feedback, go to the MPC UPC page.
