At yesterday’s Mazda CX-30 CKD launch event, Bermaz Auto Berhad’s executive chairman Datuk Ben Yeoh revealed that the firm has already garnered over 1,000 bookings for said locally assembled (CKD) iteration of arguably Mazda’s second most desirable crossover offering next to the CX-5.

Prior to its official launch, Bermaz had already opened the order books for the CX-30 CKD since Feb 16 through authorised dealers. The market is expanding in terms of the CX-30’s segment, and we’re very interested in this segment,” said Datuk Ben further regarding the model’s stellar reception, which is likely the catalyst behind its high bookings drive.

In addition to that, Bermaz’s chief exec also confirmed that waiting customers who booked the now discontinued fully imported (CBU) version of the CX-30 will receive the newly launched CKD version instead. As detailed in our launch report, the model’s localisation sees it enjoy a sizeable price cut of up to 13%, and that’s despite offering similar – if not the same – level of features as it did in CBU form.

In the same press conference held shortly after the model’s launch, Datuk Ben also responded to enquiries about the Mazda brand’s order backlogs. Excluding orders for the new CX-30, Datuk Ben revealed Bermaz’s backlog currently stood at about 6,000 units, with the new CX-30 CKD’s orders adding a further 1,000 units or so, bringing the total to about 7,000 units.

“Out of the new 7,000 units total, approximately 3,000 unit orders stem from bookings made during the Penjana tax exemption scheme’s period,” clarified Datuk Ben further. Despite this, both Datuk Ben and Bermaz appear confident that the firm will continue to thrive whilst also reaffirming their commitment towards meeting all delivery expectations for its customers.

Additionally, Datuk Ben keenly noted that both Bermaz and the Mazda brand stands highly competitive in the various crossover SUV segments it has entered. “The CX-30 is gathering a lot of initial orders and enthusiasm from the market, the Mazda CX-5 is an established product, and though volumes are lower, the 7-seat CX-8 has proved to be a compelling product for our customers,” added Datuk Ben further.

Local market aside, the exec also shared that Bermaz is poised to beef up its export efforts by 30% to 78,000 units annually. Bermaz also assembles Mazda models at the Inokom Assembly Plant in Kulim, Kedah for export to other neighbouring markets in the region.
