The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Kuala Lumpur branch had received an emergency report via its MERS999 line of a fire at downtown Suria KLCC open air carpark at about 3.46pm. The car park is located at Jalan Ampang, Kampung Bharu, Kuala Lumpur.

The reported fire involved 13 vehicles whereby 9 were motorcycles and 4 were electric scooters. 15 firemen from two stations, Jalan Tun Razak and Keramat responded to the incident and managed to bring the fire under control at 4.04pm.

According to Operations Commander, PBK II Mohd Iqbal Khan bin Malek Khan, 9 motorcycles burned and 4 electric scooters were completely burnt while a couple other bikes suffered less than 5% fire damage due to the indirect heat.

The incident is at the moment still under investigation, however speculation of fire originating from the electric scooters are already spreading like wildfire since late yesterday evening.

Theories of the current humid temperature and battery make and composition were also thrown into the picture. However, as we wait for the official JBPM investigation report, a snippet from the tweet below clearly shows that the fire did not originate from the electric scooters as the fire seems to have started from one of the other motorcycle parked in the row. Having said that, it's best not to speculate matters for the time being.
