- BYD Song L Debuts As Yet Another All-Electric Coupe Crossover
The Auto Shanghai 2023 show bears witness to yet another new EV launch, this time around from a renowned Chinese EV marque BYD. Further expanding its EV lineup is the all-new EV coupe crossover, dubbed as the BYD Song L.
Featuring a sporty coupe SUV body style, the Song L is poised to spearhead the marque’s next-gen BYD Dynasty EV series that are formed part of its global EV conquest against the likes of Tesla.
Visually, the Song L looks like a blend of several sporty crossovers like the Kia EV6 from the front end up to the A-pillar, while taking several design cues from the Porsche Cayenne for its derriere. The latter is thanks to the inclusion of a full-width LED taillights bar, plus the rakish roofline and the roof spoiler.
The Song L’s front fascia comes with illuminated grille and LED headlights with similar design to its saloon twin, the BYD Han – also part of the BYD Dynasty EV series. In charge of cooling down the front brakes and motor is a pair of sizable lower bumper intakes, featuring angular design that gives an extra sporty edge to this coupe crossover.
And just like several BYD Dynasty EV models, the BYD Song L also underpins the same e-Platform 3.0, allowing it to house an 800V EV architecture with BYD’s signature Blade battery pack technology. Due to its slim form, the Blade battery system can pack more juices in a much smaller footprint, allowing for better travel range without carrying extra weight.
Though we were given details on the chassis and platform, BYD has yet to reveal any additional details on the Song L’s battery pack capacities, nor the powertrain layout it will harness. But as per any modern EVs nowadays, the Song L might come with both single and dual motor options, with the latter usually having more power output and housing larger battery capacities.
With BYD describing the new model as a “B-Class Pure Electric SUV”, the BYD Song L is set to go against the likes of Kia EV6, Volvo C40 Recharge, as well as Tesla Model Y in the highly-competitive sporty B-SUV segment. We expect to learn more about this all-new coupe crossover from BYD prior to its Chinese market launch, set to take place in Q4 2023.
