- CATL - Chery, First To Be Powered By Sodium-Ion Battery Technology
The race to be the first in releasing Sodium-ion powered EV seems to be led by Chery as unveiled by forks at CATL during the recent Auto Shanghai 2023. Previously we had reported that BYD too would be also adopting this revolutionary new battery technology in the upcoming BYD Seagull.
Sodium-ion batteries are intended to overcome resource constraints and provide an affordable option for electric vehicles. While no further information has been provided, the company has emphasised the batteries has major advantages when it comes to low-temperature performance and fast charging especially in high-power application scenarios.
The folks at CATL had also revealed that the next-generation sodium-ion battery which is already in works would have an energy density exceeding 200Wh/kg which would indirectly set a basic benchmark in 2023.
CATL has thus far overcome scepticism with regards to the performance capability of its low energy density sodium-ion batteries while pioneering AB battery integration technology which enables sodium-ion batteries to complement its lithium-ion counterpart while increasing the output density.
CATL's method to combine sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries is promising for the future of cost-effective and efficient electric vehicles where about 65% of EV’s in the market have a range of up to 500 kilometres.
As the demand for cost-effective and efficient electric vehicles continues to grow, the future looks promising for sodium-ion batteries, and CATL is at the forefront of this innovative technology.
