- NYPD Goes Green With New Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Patrol Car Fleet
Novelty patrol cars are definitely not something new in the automotive world, as numerous law enforcement agencies across the globe have employed exotic performance cars as part of their crime-bustling fleet, especially for high-speed chases.
However, employing EVs, especially those with beefy performance numbers as a patrol car, is an entire new thing. Though we’ve seen performance-oriented EVs being transformed into fully-functional patrol cars like the AC Schnitzer-built BMW i4 Police Car, but perhaps not on the scale of what New York Police Department (NYPD) got cooking behind their garages.
For the first time in NYPD’s history, the department has unveiled a new EV patrol car fleet, consisting of 100 units of Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. Mind you, this is no ordinary Mustang Mach-E like we’ve recently reviewed back here in Malaysia, as these special units commissioned by the NYPD are souped-up with a bevy of patrol car essential gears and equipment.
Beyond the iconic NYPD livery its draped in, the NYPD Mustang Mach-E GT patrol car is equipped with a full lighting system with sirens and comms unit, just like any other proper cop car. The Mustang badge also doesn’t look out of place in this cop car, as we’ve seen many previous Mustang models being turned into proper patrol cars before, albeit in the coupe body style instead of this low-sitting crossover style.
And NYPD doesn’t skimp on the specs, too, as all 100 units of the Mach-E cop car are based on the top-specced Mach-E GT model, which harnesses a dual-motor setup that sends over 480 HP and 813 NM to all four wheels (AWD). High-speed chases shouldn’t be a problem for this Mach-E GT, as it propels from nought to 100 KM/H in just 4.4 seconds.
And thanks to the car’s low-sitting stature, it is arguably more agile and planted compared to other NYPD patrol cars, which is important to manoeuvre the slithering and tight streets of New York.
Whole-day patrol duty also wouldn’t be an issue for the Mach-E GT, as said motor setup is juiced by a sizable 98.7-kWh battery pack fitted inside the 400-volt EV architecture, which grants it a maximum EV range of 435 KM.
The NYPD Mustang Mach-E GT patrol car has officially started its job, with 24 initial units already reported for duty, covering key areas such as Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. More importantly, the department’s decision to switch to EVs will lead them to cut a sizable chunk out of their expenditures, with numerous reports indicating that they’ve spent up to $100 million (RM446 million approx.) for fueling their patrol fleets in 2022 alone.
