- smart #3 Teased Ahead Of Full Reveal - Intelligent Pure Electric SUV
With the revitalisation of the smart brand under the joint-venture between Mercedes-Benz and China’s Geely Group, we are beginning to see more electrified new releases as the pack strives to become a leader in the global electric vehicles (EVs) scene.
Recently, smart on its Chinese webpage revealed design details of its new generation of pure electric car family, the smart #3. The automaker terms the #3 as its first-ever intelligent pure electric compact coupe SUV. More details on this new model is not available, but given both the brand’s history and technological know-how, we surely can expect the #3 to be one of the most technologically-advanced offerings available in the market.
The smart #3 would adopt a series of aerodynamic design language while still keeping to the current smart design philosophy – "sensibility and sharpness". The new smart #3 would feature bolder and dynamic lines while still boasting an impressive drag coefficient (Cd) rate 0.27.
The #3 would achieve its claimed aerodynamic numbers through optimised design and configurations which would include active air intake grille (AGS), the iconic air curtain on the front facia, front wheel windshield, rear diffuser and a sporty rear spoiler. Additionally, other subtle aerodynamic design ques would include reworked rearview mirrors, hidden door handles and upgraded undercarriage guards.
Furthermore, the smart #3 would feature a slim LED headlight design similar to the #1, while the taillights carry new pixelated elements that would add a strong sense of masculinity while still being fashionable.
According to the marque’s design department, the bulk of the vehicle's energy is used to overcome wind resistance when cruising at 80 KM/H speed. In the case of the #3, with its low Cd, it would have improved cruising range, energy efficiency and higher driving speed while still being able to keep road and wind noises low, hence offering a better driving experience.
smart Automobile VP of Research and Design Yang Jun commented, “The new smart #3 not only has a stunning appearance, but also has outstanding aerodynamic performance. This is due to the combined partnership output by both the smart engineering research and development team and Mercedes-Benz's global design team goal in delivering a vehicle with combined beauty and functionality."
The smart #3 is poised to make its global premiere in the upcoming 2023 Shanghai International Auto Show. Being the brand’s first intelligent pure electric compact coupe SUV, the #3 will surely set an interesting benchmark in its market segment.
