The recently-launched Proton X90 SUV is making headlines everywhere, being the first new energy vehicle (NEV) model launched by the automaker in conjunction with the marque’s 40th anniversary. Aside from being Proton’s first-ever three-row SUV model, the X90 also grabbed the headline by acing the ASEAN NCAP safety test.

2023 Proton X90 tested with 2021-2025 ASEAN NCAP Protocol at CATARC facility

This three-row D-SUV gets a 5-star rating from ASEAN NCAP, scoring 83.75 points out of the possible 100. Conducted at the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (CATARC) facility in China, the X90 was being put on the new and stricter ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 assessment protocol.

This new testing protocol adds more emphasis on testing the car’s advanced driver assistant system (ADAS) features and capabilities which includes dedicated tests for the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, as well as the blind spot monitor and motorcyclist safety rating.

Breaking down the points into segments, the X90 managed to score an impressive 30.2 out of 32 points in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) segment, partly due to the car’s six airbags system. As for the Child Occupant Protection (COP) segment, this D-SUV earned 45.37 points out of the possible 51, scoring full points for the front impact protection segment.

As for the newly-added safety assist testing protocol, the X90 performed rather well for the AEB testing part, while receiving satisfactory ratings for the blind spot monitor and motorcyclist safety parts. All in all, the car still managed to grab a 5-star rating in this segment, scoring 16.5 out of the maximum 21 points.

Aside from the X90, previous Proton X models like the X50 and X70 also scored 5-star ratings for the ASEAN NCAP testing, although both models were tested based on the previous 2017-2020 ASEAN NCAP testing protocol, which excludes the dedicated ADAS testing segment.

The 2023 Proton X90 arrives in four variants starting at RM123,800 for the baseline Standard variant, RM130,800 for the middleweight Executive variant. Meanwhile, the top-two variants, the Premium variant is priced at RM144,800, while the range-topping Flagship spec – the sole variant offered with a 6-seat layout and panoramic sunroof – commands the heftiest price tag of RM152,800.
