Three Contra-flow Lanes In KL From July 3 To Reduce Peak-Hour Traffic

2.2 million cars traverse KL city during peak hours.
According to Anthony Loke, contra-flow lanes will be implemented in Kuala Lumpur beginning July 3 to alleviate traffic congestion. The lanes would be implemented in three locations, according to the Transport Minister, who spoke at a press conference following a traffic congestion technical committee meeting here on Friday (May 19). One will run for 2.4 kilometres from the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza to the Besraya intersection. The existing southbound contra-flow lane from Jalan Maharajalela to Taman Connaught will also be extended to evening peak hours for a 4-kilometer stretch.

A contra-flow lane will also be built from Ampang Point to Jalan Tun Razak. "It will be for 3 kilometres." This lane, however, can only be used by public transport, such as buses', he said, adding that private vehicles that use this lane will face penalties. Loke added that the timeframe for implementation is to allow the stakeholders involved to prepare. He stated that the lanes would be activated during peak hours of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. "The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) will develop guidelines to ensure that these measures are carried out efficiently."

"Other measures will continue to be collectively studied before being implemented," he said. He stated that no structural changes would be made to the contra-flow lanes. "Cones will be placed along the route to mark the lanes." Miros guidelines may also reduce the risk of accidents in these lanes," he added. Loke admitted that these measures were only a temporary solution, noting that there were at least six million cars moving around the Kuala Lumpur area on a daily basis, not including surrounding areas like Petaling Jaya. "During peak hours, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 2.2 million cars traverse the city, and this is a fact." "In the long term, we hope to change attitudes while also improving public transport systems and encouraging its use," he said.
