Driving is truly a life-long learning experience that no matter how experienced you are, there is always something new to learn and improve upon. However, the most important part of learning how to drive is the initial phase where most folks form their driving skill foundation.

Honda US's Drive Coaching app

To help further bolster this foundation, Honda US has launched a new Honda Drive Coaching app that aims to help new drivers get better behind the wheel. Interestingly, this app goes beyond just providing common safety tips.

Thanks to Apple CarPlay mobile connectivity, the Honda Drive Coaching app can be accessed via Honda's latest infotainment system

While the app is only available via Apple’s App Store, users can access them once they connect their iPhones to their Honda’s infotainment system via Apple CarPlay, enabling them to access the app on board. Through this connection, the app can analyse the driver’s inputs in real-time, while providing lessons on safe driving practices.

The app monitors the car’s steering, braking, and acceleration inputs in order to provide a summary of the driving, specific tips, while tracking the driver’s progress at the same time. At the end of every lesson, the app will give the score based on the driver’s input, while providing additional tips for them to improve upon.

Among the lessons included in this app are the driving position, steering wheel operation, brake operation to start, and many more will come soon. To help young drivers stay determined and focus on the lessons, the app also incorporates some gaming elements and challenges for drivers to tackle.

Current-gen Honda Civic (left) and Honda HR-V (right) are both compatible with this app (only in the US)

Launched only in the US, the Honda Drive Coaching app is compatible with latest Honda US models including the current-gen Honda Civic, Honda HR-V, Honda CR-V, and many more. Aside from Honda, said app is also compatible with Acura cars, including the new Acura Integra and many more to come.

In the US alone, 16- to 19-year-old teens are three times more susceptible to a fatal car accident compared to someone 20 or older. According to the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC), car crashes kill more than 2,800 teens and injure another 227,000 in 2020 alone. With this new app, Honda US hopes that it will help young drivers to learn and understand better about the importance of safety when driving, hence reducing these atrocious figures in future’s time.

As for now, we have not received any indications whether this app will be offered beyond the US. We at Caricarz.com certainly think that this app will be beneficial for young drivers in Malaysia, too, should Honda Malaysia decide to bring them here.
