The funky Toyota C-HR crossover is getting a next-gen redux, and it will be launched later this month. Ahead of its global unveiling, Toyota has released a new teaser image showcasing the next-gen model.

As expected, said teaser image reveals nothing much about the new model, except for the illuminated taillights. We can see that the second-gen C-HR taillights design deviates from the current-gen one, featuring a trio of parallel LED lines instead of the C-shaped ones we saw on the old model.

Interestingly, the two light bars almost meet in the middle, only to be separated by what seems like illuminated ‘Toyota C-HR’ lettering – yet another design element that deviates from the old model. Could this also mean that Toyota has dropped the tailgate emblem and opt for lettering, just like how its twin-brand Lexus did on the new LBX compact crossover?

Though nothing much can be derived from said teaser image, at least we know that the second-gen C-HR will be based on the Toyota C-HR Prologue Concept unveiled last year. This concept model boasts some next-gen Toyota design cues, notably the C-shaped LED headlights and hammerhead-like front fascia that made it akin to the new Prius model.

The C-HR Prologue Concept shows that the new C-HR will retain its funky facade

Aside from that, the concept model previews that the new C-HR will continue to be the funky-looking crossover like its predecessor, featuring sloping roofline, aggressive body kit and aero bits, as well as sporting flared-out wheel arches, giving the car a muscular stance. All of these striking design cues and features mean that the new C-HR won’t deviate that much from the old model, so old C-HR fans got something to look forward to.

Perhaps the biggest news about the new C-HR is that Toyota will offer it with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, aside from the standard series-parallel hybrid (HEV). Apart from that, we can’t confirm nor deny whether the full-ICE nat-asp 1.8-litre mill will make its return to the next-gen C-HR, although we’d say it is unlikely since the new model is developed for the European and Japanese markets in mind, where the former market boasts very strict emissions standards.

The new C-HR will join alongside the TNGA-based Toyota Yaris Cross and Toyota Aygo X hatchback as the marque’s latest subcompact lineup. The second-gen Toyota C-HR will make its global debut later in June 26, 2023, with sales and deliveries set to commence in the European market before the end of the year. Just like the previous-gen model, we can expect the new one will have a dedicated GR-Sport variant in the near future.
