No Honda e Successor Planned, New EV SUVs And Sportscar Planned Instead

It seems the Honda e supermini will not see a second generation.

Reports online indicate that the future of Honda’s global EV line-up will not include a successor to the Honda e. Instead, Honda will shift its focus towards producing more electrified crossover SUVs. On top of which, the Japanese automaker also hinted of a possible new EV sportscar debuting this year too.

Regarding the Honda e’s phase-out, this was confirmed by Honda UK with Autocar UK. Much of this is driven by growing market demands for crossovers and SUVs, to which Honda will shift its focus towards. However, this strategy might just be limited to just the UK and Europe for the moment.

Instead of superminis, Honda will shift its EV focus more towards crossovers and SUVs like the e:Ny1.

Presently, Honda is already in advanced development stages for a new passenger and commercial mini-EV for its Japanese home market, and it forms part of the H-marque’s planned 30-EV offensive by 2030. Moreover, this upcoming mini-EV is poised to be market-specific, likely entering Japan’s Kei car segment.

In Europe, Honda’s current non-SUV range consists of the Honda e, Civic sedan, as well as the Jazz hatchback. After which comes a range of high-riding products like the hybrid HR-V, its larger ZR-V twin, the venerable CR-V, as well as the all-electric e:Ny1 that’s slated to see deliveries commence early next year.

As part of its 30-EVs by 2030 plan, at least two sportscars were planned by Honda, and at least one will debut this year it seems.

Besides SUVs, Honda is also reportedly poised to debut a brand new and all-electric sportscar offering later this year. In fact, as part of its 30-EV offensive mentioned, at least two sportscars were planned, and it seems at least one will be shown this year, and it could also reportedly wear the Type-R badge.

Technical specs remain a closely-guarded secret, but Honda representatives have hinted to Car UK of its similar positioning against the MG Cyberster. This has led to several sources describing this upcoming Honda EV sportscar to be somewhat of an electrified successor to the legendary Honda S2000 roadster.

Honda's first EV sportscar, which the firm promises will "stun the world", is set to underpin the e:N platform and feature a rear-mounted motor. Pictured here is the Honda Sports EV concept from 2017.

Originally created to celebrate the firm’s 50th anniversary, a successor to the Honda S2000 has long been in the pipelines, and now it seems almost certain it will be electric. Moreover, given that this year marks Honda’s landmark 75th anniversary, it further fuels the possibility of debuting as early as this year.

Sources further notes that it will underpin Honda’s new e:N platform and harness a rear-mounted motor. In regards to the Type-R badge it will supposedly wear, Honda’s claims that it will “stun the world” and affirmation that said badge isn’t obliged to use a combustion engine, further fuel things here.

Will you miss the Honda e as much as we will?

Whilst we are disappointed the quirky but tech-rich and very cool Honda e may not get a direct successor, the prospects of the Type-R badge going electric should be enough excitement for all Honda fans indeed. As for the second EV sportscar hinted, this will likely stand as a spiritual success to the NSX supercar instead.

Which of the two will you most excited to see first? As always, hit the comments below – and our social media platforms – with your thoughts on the matter…
