- Volvo EM90 EV MPV Officially Teased Ahead Of Nov Debut
New Volvo EM90 will stand as the Swedish marque's first ever luxury MPV offering when it debuts in Nov.
Swedish carmaker Volvo officially teased the upcoming new Volvo EM90, which will become the marque’s first ever luxury MPV offering. Moreover, Volvo has opted to have its first ever MPV to be all-electric too, and its primary focus will be the Chinese market once it fully debuts in November this year.
Though developed primarily for China, Volvo says additional markets beyond which will be discussed at a later date. Starting in China first makes sense given how luxury people-movers as such are a hot commodity there, as well as the surrounding Asian market in general.
Moreover, the EM90’s China-focused strategy also likely stems from what it actually underpins. Based on spyshots we’ve seen prior, the Volvo EM90 was likely developed off the Zeekr 009 EV MPV. This makes more sense given that both the Volvo and Zeekr brands fall under the umbrella of Chinese giant Geely.
The spyshot of the Volvo EM90 (top) we published sometime back. Apart from the forward lighting arrangement, it's evident that said Swedish-badged offering is similar to the Zeekr 009 (below).
Both appear virtually identical, sporting boxy lines and expansive greenhouses too. What’s visibly different are the forward LED lighting arrangement as the Volvo adopts a similar style as seen in the EX30 and EX90 EV SUVs.
In terms of powertrain, we can likely expect this Volvo offshoot to share the same 536 HP and 686 NM dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup as the Zeekr. Expect the Zeekr’s 116 kWh and 140 kWh CATL-supplied batteries choices with 702 KM and 822 KM claimed CLTC range figures respectively retained too.
The Volvo EM90 is also expected to retain the Zeekr 009's dual-motor setup plus CATL-sourced battery choices. It will also feature 'high performance' air suspension.
Also notable is the Zeekr’s zippy performance evident via its claimed 0-100 KM/H time of 4.5 seconds. This is matched with the promise of respectable agility too thanks to the adoption of double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension hardware, both tied to a ‘high performance’ air suspension setup.
More details are expected once the Volvo EM90 officially debuts in Nov later this year. In the meantime, what do you folks reckon about the prospects of Volvo’s first luxury MPV? Could this be something you’d fancy? Hit the comments below – as well as our social pages – with your thoughts…
