- BYD Continues To Top 2023 Thai EV Sales With Atto 3 And Dolphin
The BYD Atto 3 is a much popular car than you think, especially in the Kingdom north of our Peninsular's borders.
According to data published by Thai automotive portal Autolife Thailand, electric vehicle (EV) sales in the Kingdom just north of our Peninsular’s border is currently being dominated by Chinese upstart BYD.

Based on Autolife Thailand's findings, BYD continues to dominate Thai EV sales for 2023 through both the Atto 3 and Dolphin offerings.
Unsurprisingly, it’s the marque’s Atto 3 and Dolphin are leading things here. In the first nine months of this year, BYD has shifted 18,027 units of the Atto 3 and Dolphin combined, though the former larger-sized crossover SUV model holds the lion share here.
A total of 15,924 units of the Atto 3 were shifted between Jan and Sept this year in Thailand, in fact. Moreover, the Atto 3 also holds a sizeable 31.63% share in the Kingdom’s EV marketspace, beating out the rivalling Tesla Model Y which ranks as the third best-selling EV in Thailand with 4,753 units sold this year.
In the first nine months of this year, nearly 16,000 units of the Atto 3 were shifted in Thailand, accounting for a sizeable 31.63% of the Kingdom's total EV sales too.
The BYD Dolphin hatch, launched in Thailand in Aug, also saw healthy initial sales figures, shifting over 2,000 units in just the first two months in fact.
For the Dolphin, BYD’s smallest electrified offering entered the Thai market back in Aug this year, and 2,103 units of which have been shifted since. In fact, for Sept, the Dolphin hatch outsold the Atto 3 with 1,621 units in total shifted, whereas the Atto 3 saw slightly lower total of 1,610 units shifted at the same time.
Seasoned readers would know by now that BYD has launched a third model for the Kingdom just last week, which is the Seal sports saloon. There’s no sales data yet for which, but given how well both the Atto3 and Dolphin are doing there, we can perhaps expect similar performance.
Recently launched in Thailand last week is the Seal sports saloon. The model is expected to chart similar sales there, and here in Malaysia once it launches sometime in this final quarter.
Locally, sales of the Atto 3 by BYD SD Motors continues to show positive trajectory too. A quick check via data.gov.my reveals 2,369 units were registered this year as of 31 Aug. Launched at the end of July this year, the same stats portal shows 223 units of the new Dolphin have been registered locally since.
Concurrently, BYD SD Motors also sees its network growing with more outlets established nationwide in recent months. Moreover, the brand’s model range is also expected to grow further with the impending arrival of the Seal sports saloon, with many sources touting its arrival any day within this final quarter (Q4).
