2023 Suzuki Swift Concept previews marque's next-gen supermini hatch

The current third-gen Suzuki Swift hatchback is due for an upgrade, having made its global debut back in 2016. Ahead of its planned debut at the Japan Mobility Show (JMS) this year, the Japanese marque has decided to give a quick preview of its next-gen supermini hatch fighter, revealing a new design with some familiar elements derived from its predecessors.

For starters, the next-gen Swift features more curves and less angular parts compared to its predecessor, while its new front fascia sports polygonal-shaped honeycomb grille design flanked by new, sharper LED headlights. Its conventional hatchback roofline looks somewhat similar to the previous model, so as the two-tone blue and black colourway this concept is wrapped in.

More familiarities can be seen from the rear part of the new Swift, as the hatch gets similar-looking LED taillights, albeit in a boxier shape. Elsewhere, the next-gen Swift also comes with a dark-hued rear bumper accent and roof-mounted spoiler, giving this supermini hatch some sporty and rugged edge.

More importantly, the next-gen Swift will also get a new powertrain, though details like its displacement and cylinder numbers remain undisclosed, for now. However, Suzuki claims that this new mill will offer better efficiency, possibly with the help of partial electrification. For reference, the current-gen Swift is offered with a 1.2-litre mild hybrid (MHEV) powertrain in Japan, so maybe we’re looking at a somewhat similar yet improved setup here.

The updated Suzuki eVX Concept is also due to make its public debut at the JMS 2023

Making its first public debut alongside the next-gen Swift at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show is an all-new version of the Suzuki eVX Concept. Originally revealed back in January this year, this subcompact EV SUV is designed for global markets in mind, featuring a slightly updated design from the model we saw earlier this year.

For starters, the new eVX Concept looks more production-ready than the concept we saw before, featuring redesigned headlights, front grille, as well as conventional physical side mirrors. This is no surprise as Suzuki is planning to debut its production version as early as 2025, so we’re really getting closer to its final form.

In terms of battery spec, the eVX Concept will boast a targeted EV range of 500 KM, courtesy of its 60-kWh floor-mounted battery pack. As for its powertrain, the eVX Concept will likely get the latest version of Suzuki’s electronically-controlled 4x4 technology, so we expect a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup on this small EV SUV.

Aside from the supermini and EV SUV, the Suzuki eWX kei wagon EV concept will also be showcased

The third and final concept to be previewed is the new Suzuki eWX – a futuristic-looking kei wagon EV with a targeted EV range of 230 KM. It features the typical boxy kei car silhouette, but with the addition of several futuristic design touches, including the sleek C-shaped LED headlights, contrasting fluorescent green accents, and more.

While we can’t see much of its innards from these set of images, Suzuki claims the eWX will offer user-friendly cabin space that “makes people feel at home”.

Aside from the three new concepts, Suzuki’s showcase at the upcoming JMS 2023 will also feature several kei car models, including the Spacia and Spacia Custom kei vans, as well as the Suzuki e Every Concept all-electric concept kei van with 230 KM EV range. Plus, the automaker will also share the stage with its two-wheel counterpart, alongside plenty of electric mobility solutions.

Previously known as the Tokyo Motor Show (TMS), the Japan Mobility Show 2023 will kick-start from Oct 26 to Nov 5, taking place at the Tokyo Big Sight convention centre, located in the heart of the Japanese capital.
